Softball Falls to UMass Boston On Day Two In Myrtle Beach

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.  The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) softball team continued the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex in South Carolina on Sunday, falling to the UMass Boston (UMB) Beacons, 9-1, in five innings. The Blue Jays game against Stevenson, which was also scheduled to be played on Sunday, was rained out.

GAME ONE

Score: USJ 1, UMB 9
Records: USJ (1-2), UMB (3-0)
Location: NMB Sports Complex - Field 4 | North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED

UMB jumped out to a quick lead, taking a 3-0 edge after the first inning. Freshman infielder Alexis Volinsky (Berwick, Maine) looked to get the Blue Jays back in the game, leading off the top of the second with a triple. Sophomore first baseman Alyssa Roberts (Naugatuck, Conn.) followed up the leadoff triple, hitting a ball deep enough into the infield to bring home Volinsky, cutting the gap to 3-1.

The Beacons repeated their first inning effort in the bottom of the third, tacking on three more runs to extend the gap to 6-1. UMB threatened again in the fourth, getting runners on first and second, but senior outfielder Jenna Masiello (Cromwell, Conn.) turned a double play with sophomore infielder Brianna Catalani (Watertown, Conn.), to end the inning without surrendering a run. However, the Beacons would score three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, enacting the run rule and taking home a 9-1 victory.

USJ – Freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Ouellette (Wolcott, Conn.) picked up the loss (0-1), allowing six runs off seven hits, and striking out three batters in 3.0 innings of work. Classmate Paige Fekete (Watertown, Conn.) pitched 1.0 innings of relief, giving up three runs from four hits.

UMB – Junior pitcher Emily Doble (Danvers, Mass.) earned the win (2-0), pitching a complete game, allowing one run off three hits, while tossing four strikeouts.
