Women's Soccer Stopped by JWU Tuesday Night in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's soccer team was stopped by the Johnson & Wales University (JWU) Wildcats, 3-0, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match on a crisp Tuesday night at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex in Providence, R.I. The Wildcats, who are currently regionally ranked No. 5 in Region I, scored a pair of goals in the first half before tacking on a goal in the second stanza to claim their 13th straight victory and remain undefeated in GNAC play.

KEY MOMENTS

  • JWU's graduate student forward Jordan Restivo (Utica, N.Y.) opened the scoring with a penalty kick goal less than 15 minutes into the match, burying her opportunity into the lower-left corner of the net at the 13:44 mark.
  • Later in the opening stanza, Restivo fired a shot toward frame that was blocked by USJ's defense, but then was accidentally kicked in by the Blue Jays in their attempt to clear the ball away from the goalmouth for an own goal at the 21:51 mark to double the Wildcats' advatage heading into halftime.
  • In the second half, JWU's sophomore defender Emily DeRoehn (Old Lyme, Conn.) sent a long feed from her own end up to Restivo, who collected, turned, and knocked the ball into the lower-left side of the net for her second goal of the match and GNAC-leading 15th marker of the season to account for the final goal of the contest.

"Tonight's game was an outstanding performance as a team against a challenging opponent. The scoreboard may read otherwise, but the team showcased strong defensive discipline all game long. JWU is a very strong and explosive offensive opponent, and to only allow one earned goal through the flow of the game is kudos to the entire team," said head coach Jenna Kalwa.

NOTES

  • Over the last 10 meetings between the two GNAC programs, the Blue Jays are now 1-7-2 against the Wildcats.
  • It marks the sixth time that USJ has been held scoreless through 14 games this season.
  • The Wildcats held a significant advantage over the Blue Jays in shots in the contest, 29-5, including a 12-2 margin in shots on goal.
  • Sophomore midfielder Jenna Zup (Berlin, Conn.) was able to get off a pair of shots with one on target to lead USJ offensively.
  • USJ's freshman netminder Chandler Douglas (North Haven, Conn.) made nine saves on the night, but falls to 5-7-2 overall in goal on the season for the Blue Jays with the setback.
  • JWU's senior keeper Shannon Stockero (McLean, Va.) made a pair of saves in 65-plus minutes between the pipes for the Wildcats and earned the win to improve to 5-0-0 on the season. 
  • The Wildcats earned all of the corner kick opportunities in the match, 13-0.

Women's soccer returns back to the pitch on Saturday, October 22 for a GNAC match on the road at Lasell University. Kickoff between the Blue Jays and Lasers is slated for 12:00 p.m. at Taylor Field in Newton, Mass.
