Lasers Brought Down by Late Vassar Goal

SPRINGFIELD, MA-  A goal scored in the 81st minute lead Vassar College women's soccer to the consolation round victory over Lasell College, 2-1, in the Springfield Invitational at Irv Schmid Sports Complex on Sunday. After the tournament contest, the Lasers dropped to an 0-2 record this season and Vassar improved to 1-1.

The Brewers owned an overwhelming 18-6 advantage in shots, including a 9-2 edge in the first. Lasell's goalkeeper Elizabeth Stickley (Mashpee, MA) made nine saves in a fine showing between the pipes, while her counterpart, Ali Higgins (Dallas, TX) picked up four saves in the win.

Scoring got underway in the 33rd minute as Vassar defender Alex Grant (Coral Gables, FL) lodged a header into the net redirected from a corner kick by Sarah Bourenane (Carrollton, TX).

Lasell's sophomore forward Mary Farley (Middleboro, MA) provided the feed to freshman Bridget Lynch (Dover, NH) which would level the score in the 58th minute.  Lynch broke free on a breakaway and collected the nifty pass, pushing the ball over the goal line.

No score change occurred for 23 minutes, at which point Vassar struck for the game winner.  A long through ball by Kylie Ladenberger (Highlands Ranch, CO) found Kelsey Domb (Round Rock, TX) 10 yards out from the goal and hit her target past a sprawling Stickley.

The Lasers will return to Lasell for their home opener this week on Wednesday, September 7th, at 4:30 p.m. on Taylor Field. Lasell will continue non-conference competition against Brandeis University.
