WINTHROP, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University (RI) women and Saint Joseph's College of Maine men have captured the prestigious 2021-22 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Commissioner's Cup awards, as announced by the GNAC office on Tuesday. Due to COVID-19's cancellation of seasons each of the previous two academic years, this marks the first GNAC Commissioner's Cup winners since 2018-19.

Incredibly for the JWU women, their 86.7% marks the highest percentage in GNAC Commish Cup History since shifting to a percentage-based system, surpassing the Emmanuel College women's 76.67% percentage in 2015-16. The Wildcats women took home an amazing 26 of 30 points overall, as JWU captured GNAC titles in field hockey, women's soccer, softball, women's volleyball, and a runner-up finish in women's lacrosse.

As for the Saint Joe's men, who claim their second straight men's award after winning in 2018-19 as well, the Monks earned men's team titles in men's golf, men's soccer, and finished second over all in both baseball and outdoor track & field.

Both institutions will be formally be recognized at the GNAC Professional Development Seminar on August 11 at Regis College.

The GNAC Commissioner's Cup annually recognizes the member institution achieving the highest level of athletic success throughout the academic year. It is based upon a point system and standings are determined by percentages in order to reflect the number of GNAC sports that each member sponsors.

Schools receive five points for winning a GNAC Championship, four points for advancing to a conference title game, three points for competing in a GNAC Semifinal, two points for qualifying for a GNAC Tournament, or one point for sponsoring the sport.

Saint Joe's was second in the 2021-22 women's standings, while JWU was the runner-up on the men's side. Emmanuel was third for the women, while Colby-Sawyer College, Norwich University and the University of Saint Joseph (CT) all tied for third on the men's side.
