WINTHROP, Mass. – More than 75 student-athletes, coaches, and administrators from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) gathered this past Sunday, September 30 to volunteer their time at the 15th Annual Brian J. Honan 5K Run/Walk in Allston, Mass.

Named in honor of the former Boston city councilor who passed away in 2002, the Brian J. Honan 5K is a commemorative road race honoring Honan's unwavering dedication to his community.

The GNAC has maintained a rich tradition of participating in community volunteer efforts year-round as part of its commitment to the values of sportsmanship, integrity, and community and is proud to return year after year to pay homage to Commissioner Joe Walsh's late childhood friend and continue Honan's commitment to serving others along Brighton Avenue.

Carrying on the tradition, seven teams from across the conference joined together to assist with event registration, setting up water stations at the mile markers along the race route, cheering on runners at the turnaround point, and handling the distribution of medals at the finish line of the 2018 Brian Honan 5K that saw over 1,500 participants.

A special thanks goes out to Emmanuel College men's and women's cross country (start/finish line), Emmanuel women's basketball (registration), Lasell College women's volleyball (Mile Marker 2 water station), Regis (Mass.) men's and women's basketball (Mile Marker 1 water station and turnaround point), Suffolk University men's ice hockey (clean-up crew) for their amazing volunteer efforts and positive attitudes on a beautiful fall day in Allston-Brighton.

Honan, before passing away at the age of 39 due to complications following cancer surgery, devoted his life to public service as a teacher, prosecutor and city councilor. In his memory, the Brian J. Honan Charitable Fund was established to help support and foster programs that support education, recreation, housing and healthcare.
