Mixed Tennis drops 7-2 season opening decision to Norwich

Bennington, VT- The Norwich Men's Tennis team scored a 7-2 non conference victory over MCLA this afternoon in a match played at the Bennington Tennis Center.  The Cadets improve to 2-2 on the season while it marked the season opener for MCLA as they are now 0-1.

MCLA hung tough in doubles as Charles Najimy and Mackenna Jordan earned a hard fought point with an 8-7 (7-3) set win.  Norwich's Alexi Gilmore and Sam Beiter defeated the Trailblazers top duo of Matt Bluteau and Sam Gawron 8-3.  The Cadets Dylan Ackerman and Noah Stillman defeated Nick Castle and Mohamed Mahrous 8-2 in the other doubles contest giving Norwich a 2-1 edge.

Norwich put the match away by winning the first three singles matches to clinch the win.  Gilmore defeated Gawron in straight sets in the number two slot to put Norwich up 3-1.  Sam Beiter earned another point in the fourth spot defeating Castle 6-2, 6-1 to make it 4-1.  Norwich would clinch the match when Ackerman earned his second point in a 6-4, 6-1 win over Bluteau.

Charles Najimy earned his second point of the day with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Noah Stillman for MCLA's final point.

Norwich's Tim Birnbaum and Abbie Barker rounded out the scoring with straight set wins.

MCLA has a quick turnaround as they head to NVU-Johnson tomorrow afternoon.
