Women's Basketball Falls On Senior Day Against Albertus Magnus, 69-50

SENIOR DAY PICTURES

PAXTON, MA - Before the game started, the Anna Maria College women's basketball team honored their three seniors, Deyarna Achille (Boston, MA)Sienna Johnson (Brockton, MA), and Sierra Johnson (Brockton, MA). After the ceremony, Anna Maria and Albertus Magnus College battled in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Saturday afternoon that saw Albertus Magnus come away with the 69-50 victory at the Fuller Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Early in the first quarter, the squad utilized an 8-2 opening run spearheaded by Franchesca Hammond (Worcester, MA) and her four points along with a jumper by Sierra Johnson. Anna Maria's defense also started out strong and forced four Falcons turnovers in the opening five minutes. 
  • However, Albertus Magnus roared back after going on a massive 23-3 run that spanned from 4:45 left in the first quarter to 6:31 left in the second. During the Falcons offensive outburst, Rah-Rah Thompson (Bridgeport, CT) had nine points that included eight straight points. Also in the spurt, three different Albertus Magnus student-athletes made a three that included Cassie Couture (Waterbury, CT)Shyla Osmond (New Haven, CT), and Emma Pierson (Branford, CT)
  • Despite being down 15 (35-20) coming into the third quarter, the 'CATS cut the Falcons lead down to eight (40-32) when the squad had a 12-5 run led by Hailey Vergara (Rialto, CA) and her two made three's. Sierra Johnson also chipped in with four points that included the jumper that made it an eight-point game while Sienna Johnson had a made jump shot. 
  • Albertus Magnus did not let the AMCATS hang around though as they pushed their lead up to 15 after Osmond converted a layup for the 48-33 advantage during a quick 8-3 Falcons burst. 
  • In the fourth quarter, the Falcons continued their strong offensive play when they notched their largest lead of 19 (69-50) when Osmond knocked down a three-pointer with a little over a minute left (1:11). Vergara did her best throughout the quarter to keep the squad in the game with eight points which included two more three-pointers. Meanwhile, Sienna Johnson and Hammond had four and three points respectively. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Hailey Vergara paced the AMCATS with a season/career-high 18 points which also included a season/career-high five made three-pointers. The other double-figure scorers for the 'CATS were Hammond and Sierra Johnson who had 13 and 11 points respectively. 
  • Hammond also had a near double-double as she grabbed eight rebounds on the afternoon. 
  • Thompson led the visitors with a double-double of 28 points and 16 rebounds. Osmond also notched a double-double (18 points, 10 rebounds) while just missing out on a triple-double when she dished out eight assists. The other double-figure scorer for the Falcons Couture and her 13 points. 
  • Albertus Magnus shot 37.5 percent fro the field and 27.3 percent from three whereas Anna Maria was 29.9 percent from the field and 24 percent from three. 

WHAT'S NEXT

Anna Maria wrapped up their season with a 6-19 record and 2-9 record in GNAC play as they look to make a GNAC playoff push next season. Albertus Magnus awaits their GNAC playoff opponent on February 25 at a time to be determined later.
