NEWTON, Mass. - Mount Ida College Athletics is pleased to announce the addition of women's varsity field hockey. The first season for Mustang field hockey will kick off during the 2014 – 2015 academic school year.
The College recently unveiled a new state-of-the-art athletic field facility featuring all season turf, energy efficient lighting, new stands, press box and scoreboard. Since the opening of the new facility, Athletics is in a stronger position to expand the variety of varsity athletics. The new women's field hockey program will begin as a club sport in fall 2013 in order to prepare for the inaugural varsity season in 2014. A coaching staff for the team is to be named shortly.
Matthew Burke, Athletic Director, stated, "Mount Ida is committed to providing programs to meet the interests of our students and serve the mission of our College. Recently, our female students have voiced a strong desire for the sport. We are happy to provide the opportunity and believe field hockey will bring added excitement and enjoyment for our students and Mustang fans."
Mount Ida College will become the seventh member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference to sponsor field hockey and presents the opportunity for the Conference to add a field hockey championship to it's portfolio.
The addition of women's field hockey brings Mount Ida Athletics' total of varsity athletic programs to 16. For women, the College offers 10 programs, including basketball, soccer, lacrosse, tennis, equestrian, cheerleading, and volleyball, cross country and softball; and for men, six programs, including basketball, football, lacrosse, cross country, soccer and volleyball.
