Norwich places 149th in Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup rankings
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) released the final results of the 2012-13 Division III Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings recently.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) released the final results of the 2012-13 Division III Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings recently.
Norwich University topped all Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) institutions by placing 149th overall with 133 total points.
Norwich finished ranked 86th the last two seasons and scored an all-time best 223 points in 2011-12. In 2010-11, NU had 208 points and in 2009-10 the Cadets accumulated 215 points to finish in 83rd place. There were 328 Division III institutions that earned points in this year’s standings.
Schools are awarded points based on qualifying for the NCAA Tournament in 18 sports (nine best male and nine best female for each school). Each athletic team can earn as many as 100 points and as little as five points for their respective school.
Norwich received 83 points for the men’s hockey team placing third for the third straight season and scored 25 points from women’s hockey and men’s lacrosse each making the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Perennial New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) power Williams College regained Directors’ Cup after seeing its 13-year streak snapped by Middlebury last year. The Ephs won their 16th overall title in the last 18 years with 1,273.75 points. Williams was the lone school to break the 1,000-point mark in 2012-13.
Emory (Ga.), Middlebury, Wisconsin Whitewater and Washington University rounded out the top five.
