STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's softball Head Coach Jamie Smyth '92 recorded his 300th career victory with a 5-4 extra-inning win over reigning GNAC Champion Rivier College at Richard W. Bailey Field on Saturday afternoon.
Smyth, the winningest coach in SJC softball history with a 303-232 (.566) record in nearly 14 seasons, is just the fourth skipper in St. Joe's Athletics history to reach the 300-win plateau. Rick Simonds (men's basketball & softball, 504), Will Sanborn '86 (baseball, 485) and Mike McDevitt '83 (women's basketball & volleyball, 436) are the others in the exclusive club.
Coach Smyth, a four-year member of the Monks' baseball team in the late 80's and early 90's, began coaching the SJC softball team in 1998. He has guided the Royal Blue to nine 20-win seasons, three conference championships, two ECAC DIII New England Tournament appearances and a DIII Independents New England Region Championship.
Saint Joseph's, 57-19 (.750) in three-plus seasons as a member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), has advanced to the conference tourney in each of the last three seasons and served as a first-round host the past two years.
Coach Smyth's first career victory was against Dominican College on March 13th, 1998 during the Monks' spring trip. He recorded his 100th win against Green Mountain College on May 10th, 2001 and his 200th triumph came against Bowdoin College on May 1st, 2007.
Smyth has garnered six Coach of the Year accolades including the GNAC Coach of the Year award last spring.
