Championship History
Tournament Format
The GNAC Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament will feature the top ten teams in the conference standings at the end of the regular season, which the seventh seed faces the tenth seed and the eighth seed and ninth seed face each other in the play-in round. The winners in the play-in will face the top two seeds to round out the quarterfinals. All tournament matches are played to decision.
Seeding and Tiebreaking Criteria
Teams are seeded based on the regular season standings. Ties for seeding will be broken by the following sequential criteria:
- Number of conference wins
- Conference head-to-head results*
- Results vs. highest-ranked conference teams
- Head-to-head scoring differential based on sets won (Adopted May 1999)
- Head-to-head scoring differential based on points
- Scoring differential vs. highest-ranked conference teams based on sets won
- Scoring differential vs. highest-ranked conference teams based on points
- Results vs. common opponents
- Coin toss
* Note: If more than two teams are tied, head-to-head will refer to the team’s combined conference record against all other teams involved in the tiebreaker.
If more than two teams are tied, seeding will be determined by separating the highest-ranked team first (Adopted Aug. 2016). The tiebreaking criteria will then be applied to the remaining teams from the beginning. This process continues until all seeds are finalized.
All-Tournament Team
Seven (7) individuals will be selected. Coaches will choose the player(s) from their own team to be selected. The number of selections each team is allowed is as follows:
Champion – 2 players
Runner-up – 2 players
Other two semifinalists – 1 player each
Tournament Most Valuable Player – 1 player
Host Site Administrator is responsible for contacting the other two semifinalists’ teams for their All-Tournament representative prior to the championship.
