GNAC Baseball Report: Week 3

( FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 9 - 15 )

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Tim Unczur, Colby-Sawyer (Sr, UT - Danvers, Mass.)

Unczur led the Chargers in several offensive categories last week. The senior posted a .533 batting average (8-15), .682 OBP and ridiculous 1.400 slugging percentage for a 2.082 OPS. Unczur had at least one hit in each of the six games,  drew seven walks, and had six extra-base hits, including three home runs. He also struck out six and allowed four runs in 6.0 innings on the mound.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Kaelen Close, Colby-Sawyer (So, P - Greenfield, Mass.)

Close tossed a complete game one-hit shutout in his only appearance last week. He threw seven innings and struck out 10 (three walks) Close was one strike away from the no-hitter, but the D'Youville batter singled to center to break up the bid. He retired the next batter for the complete game one-hitter. 

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Cooper O'Brien, Colby-Sawyer (Fr, 1B - Vergennes, Vt.)

O'Brien wrapped up his first collegiate week on the diamond with a .545 batting average in five games. He posted an on base percentage of .583 and a slugging percentage of .818. The first-year player collected six hits in 11 at-bats and added four RBI and a couple of stolen bases. With game one against Gordon tied 3-3, O'Brien recorded the big hit by knocking in a pair with the eventual game-winning runs. 


WEEKLY HONOR ROLL

Brandon Clark, Albertus Magnus (Sr., C - Cheshire, Conn.) - Clark was outstanding during Albertus' spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. The senior catcher maintained a .423 batting average over seven games with 10 RBI, three home runs, four doubles and nine runs scored. He helped the Falcons go 4-3 over the week, picking up notable wins over Lancaster Bible and Penn State Harrisburg, who received votes in the latest NCBWA/D3Baseball.com top 25 poll. 

Jay Palais, Albertus Magnus (Sr., P - Farmington, Conn.) - Palais appeared three times during Albertus' spring trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. this past week, notching seven strikeouts over 3.0 innings with zero runs allowed and one save. The senior began the week with two strikeouts over an inning in the Falcons' 15-7 win over Lancaster Bible on Monday. He then recorded three more strikeouts against Penn State Harrisburg, who received votes in the latest NCBWA/D3Baseball.com top 25 poll, to preserve a 10-6 triumph. His final showing was against Penn State Berks on Thursday, when he earned a save by fanning two batters in a clean seventh inning. 

Noah Holland, Anna Maria (Jr., C/1B - Sandwich, Mass.) - Holland was a tough out this past week as he slashed .500 /.483/.643, going 14-for-28 with four doubles and eight RBI. 

Jack Marzec, Anna Maria (Jr., RHP - Northbridge, Mass.) - Marzec threw a complete-game, three-hit shutout against WPI with nine strikeouts (one walk). 

Wyatt Sihvonen, Lasell (Jr., INF - Lebanon, Conn.) - Sihvonen batted .667 (8-of-12) in a 1-1 week for the Lasers with three doubles, a triple, a home run, six RBI, six runs scored and three stolen bases. He went 5-for-7 on Tuesday in a win over Pine Manor with three doubles, a home run, five RBI and four runs scored, and went 3-for-5 in a setback Wednesday against Emerson with a triple, two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases.

Matt Bergeron, Saint Joseph's (Me.) (Sophomore, RHP - Salem, N.H.) - Bergeron tossed a nine-inning shutout to help Saint Joseph's defeat Endicott, 2-0, on Tuesday afternoon. The sophomore right-hander scattered six hits and walked only one batter as the Gulls had just one runner reach third base and only twice saw multiple runners reach in the same inning. The complete-game nine-inning shutout is the first thrown by a Monks' pitcher since the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

Blase Cormier, Suffolk (Jr., 1B - Wayland, Mass.) - Cormier slashed .588 / .667 / .706 in a 3-3 stretch, going 10-for-17 with two doubles, four walks, two runs and seven RBI. In a DH sweep of Fitchburg State on March 9, he had three hits and four total bases in each contest with four total RBI. 

Steven Rossi, Suffolk (So., P - Corning, N.Y.) - Rossi strck out six and walked two while surrending just one run on four hits over 8.0 IP in a 2-1 win against Ursinus.
