Hamilton's First Act Lifts Chargers to 72-46 Win over JWU

NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 25, 2020 – Colby-Sawyer senior Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Chargers to a 72-46 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory over Johnson & Wales on Saturday afternoon.   

Colby-Sawyer improves to 12-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play. The Chargers host defending GNAC champion Emmanuel on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Johnson & Wales drops to 10-9 overall and 2-3 in the GNAC. The Wildcats will wrap up January with a 5:30 p.m. Wednesday home game against Suffolk.

Hamilton was 10-of-20 from the floor and 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. She added five assists and four rebounds. Junior Joslin Wainwright (Plainfield, N.H.) scored 16 points and made all six of her free throws. Senior Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) chipped in eight points, 11 rebounds and three blocks.

Johnson & Wales was led by senior Britney Gallagher's (New City, N.Y) 11 points. Sophomore Tara Murphy (Killingworth, Conn.) added 10 points off the bench. Senior Maddy Moro (Catawissa, Pa.) scored nine points and grabbed a team best 11 boards.

Hamilton poured in 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting to lead the Chargers to a 23-4 leader after the first quarter. The Colby-Sawyer defense was stifling and held the Wildcats to 2-of-14 shooting from the field. The Chargers also had a 15-5 advantage on the glass and shot 55.6%.

JWU found the flow on offense in the second frame and shot 46.2% from the floor. The visitors slowly chipped away at the deficit to outscore Colby-Sawyer 17-13, but still trailed 36-21 at the half. Murphy had six points, while Gallagher scored five to lead JWU.

Colby-Sawyer reasserted itself in the third quarter with a 19-9 edge to take a 55-30 lead after 30 minutes. Hamilton scored eight points for the Chargers.

The home team added to its lead with a 17-16 scoring edge in the final frame. Wainwright and first-year Noelle Barrett (South Berwick, Maine) combined for 11 points to lead the Chargers in the fourth.  

The Chargers finished the game with a 44-18 advantage of points in the paint and a 45-34 edge in rebounds.
