Men's Basketball Earns 71-63 Win over JWU

NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 25, 2020 – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team earned a 71-63 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory over Johnson & Wales on Saturday afternoon.

Colby-Sawyer goes to 7-9 overall and 1-2 in the GNAC. The Chargers will step out of conference action for the final time this season to host Keene State on Monday at 7 p.m. Johnson & Wales falls to 9-9 overall and 1-3 in the GNAC. The Wildcats host Suffolk on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Seniors Dana Bean (Franklin, N.H.) and Patrick Coffey (Westford, Mass.) paced the Chargers with 18 points apiece. Bean became the seventh player in program history to eclipse 1,500 career points. He now has 1,513. Sophomore Terrence Harvey Jr. (Smyrna, Ga.) added 13 points.

JWU received a game best double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds from senior Brian Hogan-Gary (Staten Island, N.Y.). Junior Nate Patenaude (Smithfield, R.I.) scored 14 points and grabbed nine boards, while junior Justin Bullock (Spring Valley, N.Y.) chipped in 12 points. Sophomore Danny Ampofo (New Haven, Conn.) rounded out the top four Wildcat scorers with 11.

The first several minutes of the contest featured up-and-down action with numerous lead changes. The Chargers took a 24-17 lead after a Scott Lampron (Tilton, N.H.) trey, midway through the frame. JWU clawed back to take a 28-27 lead with an Ampofo deep ball. The home team finished the frame with a 7-4 spurt to take a 34-32 lead into the break. Hogan-Gary was 8-of-11 for 16 points to lead all players in the first.

Ampofo tied the game with the second half's first bucket. Colby-Sawyer then slowly built a nine-point lead at 51-42 with 12:28 left to play. The Wildcats closed the gap to four with a Patenaude three-pointer at 6:50. Another Patenaude make from beyond the arc with less than two minutes to play pulled the visitors to within a pair at 63-61. That would be as close as JWU would get as the Chargers scored the next six points to put the game away.

The game had 10 lead changes. Colby-Sawyer shot 41.8% (28-67) from the floor, while JWU shot 42.9% (27-63).
