Chargers Drop Game in Puerto Rico to Loras

SAN JUAN, P.R. - December 20, 2019 - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team fell to nationally ranked Loras College (Dubuque, Iowa), 72-42, at the Colegio Universitario de San Juan as part of the Puerto Rico Clasico Tournament. 

The Chargers suffer just their second loss of the season, both to nationally ranked teams, to fall to 9-2. Colby-Sawyer plays Oneonta (2-6) on Saturday at 11 a.m. local time, 10 a.m. eastern time. Loras, ranked 19th in the latest WBCA poll and 23rd in the D3Hoops.com poll, improves to 9-1. 

Colby-Sawyer was led by senior Tianna Sugars' (Oxford, Maine) 15 points. Junior Joslin Wainwright (Plainfield, N.H.) tallied nine points and five rebounds. First-year Noelle Barrett (South Berwick, Maine) contributed five points, four rebounds and a block. 

The Duhawks received 15 points from Marissa Schroeder. Riley Eckhart was 3-of-5 from deep to finish with 11 points and three steals. Courtney Schnoor added 10 points in 16 minutes. 

Loras raced out to an early advantage and never looked back. The Duhawks hit three threes in the first and led 22-9 after 10 minutes. 

The Duhawks turned up the defensive pressure in the second and forced 12 Colby-Sawyer miscues that resulted in 20 points. At the half, Loras was 8-of-19 from three-point range and led 49-15. 

Colby-Sawyer kept the third quarter close, holding Loras to three field goals. The Duhawks, however, made 11 free throws in the frame to edge Colby-Sawyer 18-14 in the frame. Sugars had six points in the quarter. 

The Chargers won the fourth quarter 13-5 and allowed just one made field goal by Loras. Sugars scored seven points in the stanza.  

Colby-Sawyer outrebounded Loras 37-32. The Duhawks finished the game 19-28 from the free throw line, while Colby-Sawyer made 10-of-19.
