Regis Outlasts Women's Basketball, 41-37

NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 31, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team was edged by Regis, 41-37, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Thursday evening.

Regis improves to 8-13 overall and 4-4 in the GNAC. The Pride will host Rivier on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. tip. Colby-Sawyer drops to 13-8 overall and 5-3 in conference action. The Chargers will return to the court on Tuesday at Norwich.

Regis junior Katryna Veasey (Quincy, Mass.) led all players with 14 points. She added eight rebounds and a pair of steals. Junior Valerie Martin (Derry, N.H.) notched a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Maura Russell (Braintree, Mass.) contributed 10 points.

Junior Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) led the Chargers with her 10th double-double of the season. She scored 10 points and brought down a game-best 12 rebounds. Junior Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) was the second Colby-Sawyer player to reach double figures with 10 points. She added three assists to move into second on the all-time list with 487. Sophomore Riley Corrigan (Winooski, Vt.) chipped in with five points.  

Each team applied great defense in the first quarter, leading to five total field goals between the teams. Veasey scored six of her 14 points in the frame to stake Regis to a 7-6 lead after 10 minutes. Sophomore Mackenzie Buzzell (Lovell, Maine) had five points for the Chargers.

The Pride scored the first four points of the second quarter to take an 11-6 lead and later led 15-9 after back-to-back jumpers from first-year Arie Searcy (Santa Rosa, Calif.). Colby-Sawyer finished the frame with six free throws and a Hamilton layup to erase the deficit and take a 17-15 at the half.

The lead see-sawed back to Regis in the opening minutes of the third as the Pride received four points from Martin and a bucket from Veasey to take a 21-17 lead.  The visitors held an advantage until a Lydia Nattress (Winooski, Vt.) jumper knotted the game at 25-25 with 2:37 left in the stanza. Russell connected on a trey in the final seconds to send the game to the fourth with Regis in front by a score of 28-25.

The fourth quarter began with a Corrigan three-pointer and a Sugars conventional three-point play to put Colby-Sawyer on top 31-28. Martin then tied the game with a three-pointer with 6:01 left. Sugars put the Chargers back in front, but Regis received a basket by Veasey, a trey from Russell and a jumper by Martin to regain a lead, 38-33. The Chargers would pull within a pair at 38-36, but Regis locked in on defense down the stretch to hold on for the 41-37 victory.

Each team took advantage of turnovers in the contest. Regis turned 18 Colby-Sawyer miscues into 20 points, while the Chargers scored 19 points off 18 Pride turnovers.
