NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 24, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team defeated Rivier, 76-49, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Thursday evening.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 12-7 overall and 4-2 in the GNAC. The Chargers will hit the road on Saturday to play at Simmons at 3 p.m. Rivier drops to 2-14 overall and 0-6 in conference play. The Raiders host the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Junior
Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) led Colby-Sawyer with 24 points and 14 rebounds. She added three blocks to move into a tie for ninth place all-time with 97. Junior
Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) finished with 12 points, nine assists, five rebounds and five steals. She moved into third in career assists with 478. Sophomore
Joslin Wainwright (Plainfield, N.H.) notched her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Senior
Tanisha Clark (Bridgeport, Conn.) added 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting.
Rivier was led by the conference's leading scorer in senior Kaylee Kavacas (Dracut, Mass.). She was 11-of-20 from the floor and 10-of 12 from the free throw line to finish with a game-high 35 points. Kavacas has scored at least 30 points six times this year and has done so in the past three games. She added seven rebounds and four steals. Senior Megan Hamel (Colebrook N.H.) contributed a team best 10 rebounds to go with five points and a pair of blocks.
Sugars opened the game with a layup off a feed from Hamilton, but Rivier answered with a jumper from Cydney Lessard (Auburn, N.H.). The Chargers then took command of the contest and finished the quarter with a 22-8 lead.
The Chargers increased their lead in the second quarter by shooting 50% from the floor and holding Rivier to 33.3%. Sugars scored eight points for the second consecutive frame, while Kavacas poured in 11. Colby-Sawyer led 46-23 at the break.
Rivier held a 17-16 edge in third-quarter scoring behind 14 points from Kavacas. The Chargers continued the efficiency on the offensive end by making 6-of-11 attempts from the floor. The home team led 62-40 after 30 minutes.
Each team shot less than 30% in the fourth, but Colby-Sawyer increased its lead once again to win the quarter 14-9 and the game 76-49.
Colby-Sawyer outrebounded Rivier 46-32 and turned 14 offensive rebounds into 18 second chance points.
