WESTON, Mass. - November 8, 2012 - The No. 5 Colby-Sawyer College Chargers defeated No. 4 Simmons College, 2-0 in the first round of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's Soccer Tournament Thursday evening at Regis College.

With the win, Colby-Sawyer (15-3-4) advances to the ECAC Semifinals on Saturday at top seed Saint Joseph's (Conn.) at 11:00 am, while the Sharks end their 2012 campaign with an overall record of 11-9-1.

The Sharks offense controlled the first half, outshooting the Chargers 11-3. Junior forward Desh Perera (Reading, Mass.) and senior Alma-Lynn Dupont (Bowling Green, Ohio) each tested Colby-Sawyer's goalkeeper Shay Spencer (Natick, Mass.) but were unable to convert. The Chargers had quality chances by Laurel Bauer (Bradford, N.H.) and Sarah Little (Scarborough, Maine) but Briana Hayes (Manorville, N.Y.) made the necessary saves and the first half expired 0-0.

In the second half, Sharks senior Justine Beauchamp (Exeter, N.H.) sent a ball up from the midfield to sophomore Keri Acheson (Peabody, Mass.) but Spencer was there for the save. After a strong 20 minutes of play by both teams, Stephanie Huntley (Woodbury, Conn.) slipped through the Sharks defense and put the Chargers up 1-0 at 68:54.

Simmons rebounded with shots by Greer Gilbert (Falmouth, Mass.) and Perera but the Chargers were able to clear the zone. At 78:25, Bauer beat a Simmons defender on the outside and sent a hard shot on net. Hayes made the initial save but was unable to control the ball. Colleen Coburn (Middletown, Conn.) was there to bury the shot for a 2-0 Chargers lead.

The Sharks had their best opportunity when senior Ally Ayotte (Litchfield, N.H.) sent a cross ball into the Chargers box to freshman Ali Berkman (Natick, Mass.), who struck a point blank shot on Spencer. Berkman followed with another quality attempt two minutes later but the Chargers were able to clear once again.

Spencer finished with 13 saves en route to the shutout.
