Men's Volleyball Wins First Match of Inaugural Season

NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 22, 2019 – Colby-Sawyer College Athletics made history once again on Tuesday evening as the men's volleyball team began its inaugural season. The Chargers defeated Southern Vermont, 3-1, in the first-ever varsity match. Colby-Sawyer won by scores of 15-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-18.

The Chargers (1-0) will host Newbury on Saturday at 1 p.m. Southern Vermont (0-1) travels to Johnson & Wales next Tuesday.

In front of a great crowd, that witnessed numerous historic firsts for the program, the Chargers did not disappoint and came away with the victory.

After dropping the first set 25-15, despite having a 10-5 edge in kills, Colby-Sawyer rallied to win the next three sets in convincing fashion. The team recorded at least 10 kills in each of the four sets and finished the match with a .106 hitting percentage.

First-year Orlando Plagata (Los Angeles, Calif.) turned in an impressive debut for Colby-Sawyer with a double-double of 16 kills and 25 digs. First-year Eric Miller (La Grange, Ill.) also posted a remarkable 15 kills. First-year AJ Gnieski (Needham, Mass.) collected 34 assists, while junior Zach Allen (Candia, N.H.) added 10 digs and five kills.

Southern Vermont was led by sophomore Zach Rogers (North Bennington, Vt.). He had six kills, six digs, two aces and a pair of blocks. Senior Adrian Dickerson (Bristol, Vt.) contributed five kills and 10 digs, while first-year Fernando Perez (Azusa, Calif.) led all players with 27 digs.
