Men's Volleyball Splits at Bard

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - February 23, 2019 - The Colby-Sawyer men's volleyball split a pair of matches in New York on Saturday. The Chargers began the day with a 3-0 victory over tri-match host Bard, but then fell 3-0 to MIT.

Colby-Sawyer goes to 6-5 and will return home on Wednesday to host Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Regis. 

COLBY-SAWYER 3, BARD 0 - 25-14, 25-17, 25-13

The Chargers hit .394 as a team and posted 19 service aces. The team tallied 11 kills on .562 hitting to win the first set 25-14. The Chargers then collected an impressive 15 kills on .314 hitting to win the second set 25-17. Colby-Sawyer wrapped up the match with 11 more kills on.400 hitting in the third. 

Orlando Plagata led Colby-Sawyer with 14 kills on .565 hitting. He added six digs and a couple of aces. Eric Miller was second on the team with eight kills. Nate Trevino hit .556 to finish with seven kills. He added six digs. AJ Gnieski registered 32 assists and an impressive 10 aces. 

Bard was led by Radoslav Skular's five kills. Joshua Han added four kills and five digs. Nic Smith had 15 assists. 

MIT 3, COLBY-SAWYER 0 - 25-14, 25-16, 25-12

The Chargers hung with the 10-2 Engineers for the first several points of the first set and held a 6-5 lead. Colby-Sawyer will still close trailing just 12-10, but MIT then used an 8-0 run to take command of the set and win 25-14. 

The second set began in similar fashion as the Chargers trailed 10-8 after a Patrick Coffey kill closed the gap. Colby-Sawyer kept the set close at 14-12 before MIT went on a 5-1 run to lead 19-13 and force a timeout. The Chargers scored the next two points, but MIT then finished the frame on a 6-1 run to win 25-16.

MIT created separation early in the third set and never looked back to win 25-12. 

Orlando Plagata added seven kills to his day to lead Colby-Sawyer. He also had a couple of blocks. Marc Flaherty collected a team best 10 digs. Patrick Coffey finished with three kills and two blocks.
