Men's Volleyball Falls to Wentworth, 3-0

NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 21, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer men's volleyball team fell to Wentworth, 3-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Thursday evening. The Leopards won by scores of 25-12, 25-16, and 25-16.

Wentworth, which was picked second in the GNAC preseason poll, improves to 7-3 overall and 4-0 in the conference. The Leopards play at Endicott on Tuesday. Colby-Sawyer drops to 5-4 overall and 0-3 in the GNAC. The Chargers travel to Bard on Saturday to play the Raptors and MIT.

The Leopards received a match-high 11 kills on .474 hitting from first-year Drew Potter (Towson, Md.). Potter added four aces. First-year Ryan Murray (Westfield, Mass.) hit .750 to finish with seven kills on eight attempts. Sophomore Kevin Devine (Charlotte, Vt.) chipped in with six kills. First-year setter Connor Adams (Budd Lake, N.J.) collected 32 assists.

First-year Orlando Plagata (Los Angeles, Calif.) had four kills and four digs for Colby-Sawyer. Playing in his first match of the season, junior Patrick Coffey (Westford, Mass.) contributed four kills and a solo block. First-year AJ Gnieski (Needham, Mass.) registered 11 assists and a couple of kills.

Wentworth posted 11 kills on .444 hitting to take the first set 25-12. Murray had four kills for the Leopards, while four different Chargers collected a kill including sophomore Nate Trevino (Boerne, Texas).

The visitors picked up another 11 kills in the second set behind a 5-kill performance from Devine. Plagata had three kills and a block for Colby-Sawyer, but the Chargers fell 25-16.

Colby-Sawyer took a 2-0 lead to begin the third set and stayed close to force a Wentworth timeout with the Leopards holding just a 9-8 lead. Wentworth scored the next four points to take a 13-8 lead and make the Charges call a timeout. Coffey connected on a kill, out of the timeout, to stop the run, but a pair of Potter kills put the Leopards in front 15-9. With the visitors leading 23-16, Potter added another two kills to give Wentworth the set and the match.
