Women's Basketball Tops NVU-Lyndon, 57-38

NEW LONDON, N.H. – December 11, 2018 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's basketball team defeated Northern Vermont University-Lyndon, 57-38, in non-league action Tuesday evening.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 5-3 and will conclude the first semester with a 7 p.m. home game against Castleton on Friday. Lyndon drops to 4-6 and will travel to Lasell on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip to close out action in December.

Colby-Sawyer junior Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) recorded her fifth double-double in six games with 19 points on 9-of-14 shooting and 11 rebounds. Junior Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) contributed 10 points and nine assists. Junior Kristen Donaghey (Franklin, Mass.) grabbed a game and career-high 12 rebounds.

Lyndon was led by senior Victoria Carlson (East Haven, Conn.). She scored nine points and had five steals. Junior Alissa Mitchell (Milton, N.H.) registered seven points, six steals and five rebounds.

Each team came out a bit sluggish in the first quarter and finished with three field goals apiece. The Chargers led 9-3 after a Mackenzie Buzzell (Lovell, Maine) three-pointer midway through the frame, but Lyndon clawed back to trail 10-8 after 10 minutes.

The Chargers looked inside in the second quarter to score three of their six buckets. Lyndon couldn't find the range from outside the arc going 0-10 in the stanza. A Sugars layup with a minute to play in the quarter gave the Chargers a 22-16 lead, which they would take into the break.

The teams picked up the flow in the third quarter for back and forth action. The Chargers pushed their lead to 13, but was quickly whittled down to eight with five points from Victoria Carlson with 4:18 to play. Colby-Sawyer regained a double digit lead with a Tanisha Clark (Bridgeport, Conn.) layup and ended the third with a 39-29 advantage.

Colby-Sawyer did not relinquish the double figure lead in the fourth and outscored Lyndon 18-9 to secure the 57-38 victory.

Lyndon forced 22 Colby-Sawyer turnovers, thanks to 17 steals, which resulted in 18 points. Colby-Sawyer won the battle of the boards by a 51-31 margin.
