Men's Basketball Drops Non-Conference Tilt to UNE, 90-79

NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 15, 2020 – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team was defeated by the University of New England, 90-79, in non-conference action Wednesday evening at the Hogan Sports Center.

UNE improves to 8-7. The Nor'easters will resume Commonwealth Coast Conference action at home on Saturday against Western New England at 3 p.m. Colby-Sawyer falls to 6-7. The Chargers will play their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference game of the season on Saturday at nationally ranked Albertus Magnus.

UNE received a game best 34 points from junior Avery DeBrito (New Bedford, Mass.). He was 11-of-21 from the floor and 6-of-12 from beyond the arc. First-year Siddiq Canty (Dallas, Texas) finished with 22 points and four blocks. Junior guard Alex Kravchuk (Mansfield, Conn.) poured in 18 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

Senior Patrick Coffey (Westford, Mass.) led Colby-Sawyer with 18 points. Senior Dana Bean (Franklin, N.H.) notched a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, to go with three blocks. Sophomore Terrence Harvey Jr. (Smyrna, Ga.) contributed 14 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

The Chargers began the game on an 10-1 run before UNE found the offensive rhythm. The visitors responded with a 12-0 run, capped by a Ray Evans (Troy, N.Y.) layup, to take a 13-10 lead just over six minutes into the half. UNE would hold a multiple possession lead for the next several minutes before a Zack Caraballo (Salem, N.H.) trey pulled Colby-Sawyer within a point at 23-22. The teams traded baskets and leads in the next couple of minutes, but UNE ended the frame with an 8-4 spurt to take a 41-36 lead into the break. DeBrito poured in 18 points for UNE, while Dana Bean had 11 in the first 20 minutes of action.

Colby-Sawyer tied the game with a quick five points to begin the second half, but UNE responded with a 11-4 run to take a 52-45 lead at 15:51. The Nor'easters led by a nine a couple of minutes later until Colby-Sawyer started to chip away and come all the way back to tie the score at 58-58 after a Jake Lorman (Rutland, Vt.) trey. Coffey then hit a three on the next Charger possession to put the Chargers on top 61-58 with 11:11 on the clock. UNE would go on a 10-0 run, eight points by DeBrito, to regain control of the game. The lead ballooned to 11 for UNE and Colby-Sawyer could not get closer than three points for the final stretch of the contest.

UNE made 15 three-pointers to Colby-Sawyer's seven.
