FRANKLIN, Mass. – August 30, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's soccer team received five goals from a pair of first-year student-athletes to defeat Rhode Island College, 5-3, in a season opener held at Dean College.
Colby-Sawyer goes to 1-0 and will play Fitchburg State tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. RIC drops to 0-1 and will play Dean tomorrow at noon.
Abby Hamelin (Chesterfield, N.H.) notched three goals, while
Sydney Jimmo (Shelburne, Vt.) added a pair to account for the Colby-Sawyer scoring.
Less than six minutes into the season, Hamelin put the Chargers on top 1-0 when she finished a pass from Jimmo.
Two minutes later, Jimmo successfully converted a penalty kick.
Jimmo added her second tally of the match in the 15th minute to push the Colby-Sawyer lead to 3-0. The play was set up by senior
Leah Dupuis (Concord, N.H.).
Soleil Galagarza got RIC on the board in the 23rd minute with an unassisted goal.
The Chargers responded in the 40th minute with Hamelin's second goal of the game to give Colby-Sawyer a 4-1 lead at the half.
RIC cut the deficit to a pair when Galagarza converted a penalty kick in the 60th minute for her second goal of the game.
Hamelin recorded the hat trick with less than six minutes to play when she scored off a feed from first-year
Sophia Chirigotis (Merrimac, Mass.).
The Anchormen would add a late goal off the foot of Alyssa Silvestre, but Colby-Sawyer went on for the 5-3 victory.
Senior
Sam Mitchell (Chester, N.H.) earned the win with seven saves and three goals against. Erica Edwards took the loss for RIC with nine saves and five goals allowed.
