Men's Volleyball Sweeps Newbury

BROOKLINE, Mass. - March 30, 2019 - The Colby-Sawyer men's volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep of Newbury on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers won by scores of 27-25, 25-17 and 25-23. 

Colby-Sawyer has won both meetings against Newbury this season after posting a 3-2 home victory in the program's second match of the season. The Chargers are now 8-13 and will play a pair of matches tomorrow at Pine Manor against the Gators and Lesley. Newbury falls to 7-16. 

First-year Orlando Plagata (Los Angeles, Calif.) led Colby-Sawyer with 13 kills and 15 digs. Sophomore Nate Trevino (Boerne, Texas) registered eight kills. First-year AJ Gnieski (Needham, Mass.) finished with 31 assists. Jake Kellogg (South Burlington, Vt.) and Zach Allen (Candia, N.H.) had four service aces apiece. Allen was also second on the team with nine digs. 

Newbury received a match-high 17 kills from Rory Dobbins. He hit .500 and added 10 digs. Alvin Fernandes and Pedro Juan de Jesus chipped in seven kills apiece. 

The first set was back and forth throughout and featured 11 ties. The Chargers held the largest lead of the frame at 20-16, but Newbury battled back to tie the set. The score was then tied at 25-25 when Eric Miller (La Grange, Ill.) had a kill and Zach Allen got an ace to lift the Chargers to a 27-25 win. 

Colby-Sawyer had 13 kills on .385 hitting in the second to cruise to the 25-17 win. Jake Kellogg had two aces in the first three points for Colby-Sawyer as the visitors led the set from the first serve. 

In the third, the Chargers raced out to a 9-3 advantage. Colby-Sawyer later led 17-11 after a Patrick Coffey (Westford, Mass.) ace. The Nighthawks did not go quietly and pulled within three at 21-18 after a Dobbins kill. Colby-Sawyer was a point away from clinching the match at 24-19, but Newbury stormed back with four-straight points to make the score 24-23. On the ensuing play, Orlando Plagata secured match with a kill as a Newbury player was in the net.
