Sugars and Hamilton Spark 68-65 Comeback Win over Colby

BRUNSWICK, Maine - November 16, 2018 - Trailing 16-6 after the first quarter, the Colby-Sawyer women's basketball erased the deficit and earned a 68-65 victory over Colby College at the Coastal Classic Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Bowdoin College. 

Colby-Sawyer improves to 2-0 and will play Bowdoin, the second-ranked team in the nation, tomorrow at 4 p.m. Tonight's meeting was the first between Colby and Colby-Sawyer since 1995. The Chargers are now 2-6 against the Mules. Colby drops to 0-1 and will play Regis tomorrow at 2 p.m.

Colby-Sawyer juniors Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) and Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) each scored 20 points. Hamilton added nine assists and seven rebounds. She moved up two places on the all-time assists list into 6th with 355. Sugars recorded her second-straight double-double with 10 rebounds. Junior Kristen Donaghey (Franklin, Mass.) and sophomore Joslin Wainwright (Plainfield, N.H.) also reached double figures with 10 points apiece. 

Bowdoin was led by a 19-point effort from Ainsley Burns. Keagan Dunbar was the only other player to score double digits with 17. Grace Coutu grabbed a game best 11 rebounds, while Kate McCrum pulled in 10 boards. 

The Chargers struggled out of the gate and made just a pair of field goals in the first quarter to trail 16-6 after 10 minutes. 

The team flipped the script in the second to win the frame 20-12 behind great play from Wainwright. She knocked down 3-of-4 field goals and added a pair of free throws to score eight points in the quarter. Bowdoin was 2-of-10 from beyond the arc. 

Both teams were locked in offensively in the third quarter each making 10 field goals, while shooting better than 55% from the floor. Colby edged the Chargers 23-21 in the frame to take a 51-47 lead after three. Dunbar poured in 11 points for Colby, while Donaghey led the Chargers with seven points in the quarter. 

Hamilton and Sugars combined to score 18 of the team's 21 points in the fourth, including several free throws down the stretch to help complete the comeback and secure the 68-65 win. Hamilton made all six of her free throws in the quarter. 

Points in the paint were even at 30-30 as was second chance points 17-17. Colby outrebounded the Chargers 49-38.
