Women's Tennis Finishes GNAC Regular Season Undefeated

QUINCY, Mass. - October 10, 2018 - The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team finished the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) regular season with a perfect 7-0 record after Wednesday's 6-2 victory at Eastern Nazarene. 

The two teams, meeting for the first time since 2010, entered today's match with 6-0 conference records and were playing for first place in the standings. Colby-Sawyer improved to 8-2 overall and 7-0 in the GNAC to lock up the top spot in the upcoming conference tournament, which begins on October 17. Eastern Nazarene suffers its first loss of the season to drop to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the GNAC to secure the second spot in the standings. There are still some conference matches to be played by other teams and the pairings for the tournament will be released after the weekend. 

Colby-Sawyer won two of three doubles matches to take an important lead heading into singles. Yashu Yang and Anna Kopituk came away with an 8-3 triumph over Adele Duval and Emily Ruttkowski at the top spot, while Hilary Boucher and Michelle Lopes combined for an 8-6 win over Veronica Jimenez and Alecia Tubbs at No. 3. The Lions were able to pick up a point at No. 2 behind strong play from Sharon Biondi and Jacquelin Arretche. The duo edged Aislinn O'Connor and Maddy Gemerek 8-6. 

The Chargers were able to secure the victory with straight-set wins by Yang at No. 1, O'Connor at No. 3, and Kopituk at No. 4. 

In the tightest match of the afternoon, Boucher outlasted Arretche 3-6, 6-2, 10-8. 

Eastern Nazarene's lone singles point came at the second flight. Ruttkowski earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Gemerek. 

Michelle Lopes took the first set 6-3 and trailed 3-0 in the second as her No. 6 match went unfinished.
