Women's Basketball Falters at Albertus Magnus

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - January 18, 2020 - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team fell to Albertus Magnus, 79-72, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Saturday afternoon. 

Albertus Magnus improves to 11-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Colby-Sawyer dips to 10-5 overall and 0-2 in the GNAC. The Chargers travel to Rivier on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tip.

Senior Lexie Hamilton led the Chargers with 24 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. She moved up three spots into 10th on the all-time scoring list with 1,120 points. Senior Tianna Sugars was 10-of-19 for 23 points. Junior Joslin Wainwright registered 17 points on 7-of-15 from the field. 

Albertus was led by Shyla Osmond's 32 points. She added eight boards and five assists. Rah Rah Thompson had 19 points, 19 rebounds and five blocks. Kyah Nowlin contributed 12 points. 

The Falcons use a strong fourth quarter to erase a five-point deficit after 30 minutes. The home team outscored the Chargers 28-16 in the fourth. A Wainwright jumper put the Chargers on top 67-63 with four minutes to play. On the ensuing possession, Albertus Magnus tied the game when Cassie Couture completed a 4-point play. The teams then traded baskets before Osmond converted a couple of jumpers to give Albertus a 73-68 lead with less than 30 seconds to play. The Faclons staved off a Colby-Sawyer comeback to earn the 79-72 victory. 

Colby-Sawyer opened the game on an 8-2 run and then later led 17-11. Thompson scored the final five points of the quarter to pull Albertus to within a point after 10 minutes. 

The Chargers also won the second quarter by an identical 17-16 score to lead 34-32 at the half. Colby-Sawyer shot 53.3% in the second and received seven points from Sugars. 

Each team shot 9-of-20 from the floor in the third quarter. Despite Albertus taking a couple of leads in the frame, the Chargers were able to increase its lead by outscoring the Falcons 22-19. Colby-Sawyer made one more three than Albertus and added a pair of free throws.
