Volleyball Defeats Emerson; Falls to Southern Vermont

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 22, 2012 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's volleyball team split a pair of games on Saturday. The Chargers began the afternoon with a 3-1 victory over Emerson, but fell 3-2 to Southern Vermont in the day's final match.

Southern Vermont came away with a pair of wins to remain a perfect 10-0. Colby-Sawyer's record goes to 5-7, while Emerson dropped both of its matches to pull even at 6-6 on the season.

Colby-Sawyer 3, Emerson 1 – 20-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-19

The Chargers were led by a 17-kill performance from junior Emilee McBride (Strafford, N.H.). She had a hitting percentage of .345 and added three blocks. Junior Courtney O'Hara (Mystic, Conn.) recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 18 digs. Freshman setter Laura Smolinski (Hebron, Conn.) had 40 assists, while junior libero Ally Le-Bruno (Medfield, Mass.) recorded a match best 24 digs.

Emerson was led by junior Alyssa Thorne (Pittsburgh, Pa.). She had 12 kills to go along with seven digs. Freshman setter Juliana Tucker (Encino, Calif.) recorded 29 assists, nine digs, seven kills, and four blocks. Junior libero Jamie Morgan (Maple Glenn, Pa.) had a team best 19 digs.

Southern Vermont 3, Colby-Sawyer 2 – 25-21, 26-24, 23-25, 20-25, 15-10

The Mountaineers received a 20-kill, 16 dig double-double from senior Jessica Alvarez (Los Angeles, Calif.). Junior setter Carrie Baltazar (Whittier, Calif.) also recorded a double-double with 40 assists and 15 digs. Senior libero Vivian Delgado (La Puente, Calif.) collected a team best 27 digs.

Courtney O'Hara led the Chargers with a career-high 18 kills to go along with 12 digs and three aces. Laura Smolinski tallied a career-high 48 assists and added 15 digs. Ally Le-Bruno had a match-high 36 digs. Junior Jackie Keating (Marshfield, Mass.) added 15 kills.

Southern Vermont 3, Emerson 1 – 25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 25-17

Southern Vermont had three players reach double-figure kills led by 16 from Jessica Alvarez. Senior Danielle Healis (Escondido, Calif.) hit .478 en route to 13 kills, while senior Alicia Manzo (Clovis, Calif.) chipped in 10 kills. Carrie Baltazar had another double-double with 45 assists and 10 digs. Vivian Delgado had a match best 21 digs.

Emerson received 10 kills from Alyssa Thorne and sophomore Alex Lynn (Willington, Fla.). Lynn hit an impressive .429. Juliana Tucker had 38 assists, 11 digs and five aces.

Colby-Sawyer will host Plymouth on Tuesday night and Rivier on Thursday night. Both games begin at 7:00 pm. Emerson travels to Simmons on Tuesday evening for a 7:00 pm contest. Southern Vermont will host Keene on Thursday at 7:00 pm.
