NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 31, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team defeated Rivier, 106-59, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Thursday evening.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 11-9 overall and 5-2 in the GNAC. The Chargers will play at Suffolk on Saturday with a 3 p.m. tip. Rivier falls to 1-19 overall and 0-8 in conference action. The Raiders have a 1 p.m. game at Regis on Saturday.
Junior
Dana Bean (Franklin, N.H.) led all players with 25 points and 10 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season. He was 9-of-11 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the free throw line. Junior
Patrick Coffey (Westford, Mass.) added 16 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore
KJ Synvrit (Miami, Fla.) and first-year
Terrence Harvey Jr. (Smyrna Ga.) added 13 points apiece. Junior
Austin Whaley (Enfield, N.H.) contributed nine points and a pair of assists. Senior
Jourdain Bell (Manchester, N.H.) registered four steals to move into a tie for third all-time with 192.
Rivier was led by first-year Jalen Watson (Woonsocket, R.I.). He scored 14 points in 13 minutes off the bench. Senior Isaiah Marks (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was the other Raider to reach double figures with 13 points in 24 minutes off the bench. Sophomore Jack McCarthy (Rowley, Mass.) added nine points on 3-of-3 shooting.
Carrier began the game with five points in 30 seconds to force an early Rivier timeout. Rivier rallied to pull within a bucket after Marks made the game 9-7, four minutes into the contest. Colby-Sawyer then used an 11-0 run, capped by a
Nick Backer (Tamarac, Fla.) jumper, to take a 20-7 advantage. Rivier's McCarthy stopped the run with a jumper at the 12:02 mark, but the Chargers took control from that moment.
Colby-Sawyer went on a 21-0 run that covered almost nine minutes of game action. The visitors then found the range from outside and made four three-pointers in the next 1:28 to cut into the deficit, 45-21. The home team responded by finishing the half with an 8-0 run and took a 53-21 lead into the locker room. The Chargers finished the first half 20-of-30 from the floor (66.7%) and outrebounded the Raiders 26-11.
The Chargers held a comfortable lead throughout the second half and outscored Rivier 53-38 to win the game 106-59.
Colby-Sawyer shot 53% from the floor and held Rivier to 32.3% shooting. The Chargers had a 53-29 advantage in rebounding.
