Women’s Volleyball Splits Saturday Matches

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—On Saturday, Sarah Lawrence College women's volleyball defeated Bard College, 3-0, and lost to University of Saint Joseph, 3-2, in a pair of non-conference matches at Bard's Stevenson Gymnasium.

The tri-match saw Sarah Lawrence (14-12) improve its win streak to four matches by defeating Bard (6-19) before it was snapped by Saint Joseph (6-20). Bard defeated Saint Joseph, 3-1, to round out the day's action.

Against Bard, Sarah Lawrence escaped with a 25-23 first set before cruising to a 25-15 win in the second. The third set saw the teams duel neck-and-neck, and the Gryphons edged the Raptors, 27-25, to complete the sweep.

Sarah Lawrence sophomore Kitty O'Sullivan (Los Angeles, Calif., Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy) recorded a match-high five service aces and 11 kills, while first-year player Zoë Spanbroek (Boca Raton, Fla., Saint Andrew's) hit double-figures with 10 kills. Rookie Molly Busk (Corbett, Ore., Corbett) led all players with 10 digs though O'Sullivan and sophomore Xina Graham-Vannais (Newtown, Pa., George School) followed closely with nine digs.

The Sarah Lawrence showdown with Saint Joseph saw the Blue Jays handily win the first set, 25-12. Though the Gryphons closed in during the second set, Saint Joseph won again, 25-23. Sarah Lawrence rallied to take the third set, 25-20, and the fourth set, 25-13, despite only 16 kills in the two sets combined.

In the deciding set, Sarah Lawrence's momentum was broken, and the Blue Jays picked up a 15-9 set and the 3-2 win.

The second match saw first-year player Jomana Abdallah (Anaheim, Calif., Fairmont Prep Academy) record 12 kills with O'Sullivan following at 10. O'Sullivan led the Gryphons with 11 digs. Senior setter Brooklynn Moore (Oakland, Calif., Santa Catalina) totaled 41 assists on the day.

Sarah Lawrence returns home for two Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) matches this week, as the Gryphons host Yeshiva University at 8 p.m. on Tuesday before taking on St. Joseph's College Brooklyn at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
