THE LEAD: Senior guard Delshawn Jackson Jr. (Hartford, Conn.) scored a game-high 31 points including 20 in the first half to power the #22 University of Saint Joseph College (CT) men's basketball team past host Emmanuel College, 95-83, Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action in Boston, Mass.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Emmanuel came out of the gets red hot, building an 11-point lead at 29-18 following a long-range triple from junior guard Jack Moulder (Newtown, Conn.) with 8:20 remaining in the first half.
- The Blue Jays answered, outscoring the Saints over the final eight minutes of the stanza by a 28-14 margin to take a 46-43 lead into halftime.
- Jackson Jr. led all scorers at the break with 20 points, going 4-for-7 from behind the arc.
- USJ opened the second stanza on an 8-0 run to take control of the game, leading 54-43 following a pair of free throws by freshman guard Taelon Martin (Springfield, Mass.).
- Sophomore guard Jaecee Martin (Hartford, Conn.) gave the visitor's their largest lead of the game with 10:41 to play, making a layup in transition to give USJ a 72-53 advantage.
- EC fought back and pulled the score to 11 points with 5:31 to play following a three by senior Blake Hardy (Waterbury, Conn.) to make it 80-69 but the Blue Jays would not allow the hosts to get any closer as they held on for their 20th straight win in the 95-83 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Moulder capped the day with a career-high 26 points, going 6-for-11 from behind the arc.
- USJ got a combined 77 points from Jackson Jr. (31), Martin (24) and junior Jordan Powell (Middletown, Conn.)
- EC junior Marcus Fox (Danbury, Conn.) posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds while senior guard Emmett Riddick (Middletown, Conn.) added 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
- Hardy added 13 points off the bench in the loss, going 6-for-6 from the stripe.
- The Blue Jays did not miss from the free throw line, going 14-for-14 on the day.
- USJ owned a 43-37 advantage in rebounds in the road win.
OF NOTE
- Prior to the start of the contest, the Saints athletic department honored the four senior members of the program including Riddick, Hardy, senior forward Owen Greene (Killingworth, Conn.) and senior manager Matt Nelson.
UP NEXT
- The Saints return to action on Tuesday, February 18 in a key GNAC showdown vs. Albertus Magnus College at 7:00 PM in New Haven, Conn. The winner of the contest will move into second place in the GNAC men's basketball standings with one game to play in the regular-season.
