Men's Volleyball Ends Trip to New York with 3-1 Win at York

JAMAICA, N.Y. - March 10, 2020 - The Colby-Sawyer men's volleyball team won a second match in as many days in New York with a 3-1 victory at York College Tuesday evening. The Chargers won by scores of 25-20, 25-17, 20-25, 25-18.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 11-6. The Chargers host a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match on Saturday against Regis and Emerson. York drops to 3-10. 

Eric Miller recorded 12 kills and eight digs to lead Colby-Sawyer. Nate Trevino finished with 10 kills on .600 hitting. Orlando Plagata also had 10 kills to go with a team best nine digs. AJ Gnieski tallied 37 assists, five digs and three kills. Giovani Dos Reis added seven kills and four aces. 

York was paced by Akil Vaughn's 18 kills. David Heyliger Jr. registered a double-double of 13 kills and 13 digs. Juan Rodriguez had 32 assists and seven digs. 

Colby-Sawyer got off to a good start by hitting .303 in the first frame to finish with 14 kills. After York opened the scoring, Colby-Sawyer responded with four-straight points to take a 4-1 lead. The Chargers held the lead for the remainder of the set, which was ended by a pair of Eric Miller kills. 

The visitors had 12 kills in the second, but held the Cardinals to five to cruise to a 25-17 win. York led 3-0 before Colby-Sawyer rattled off five points in a row. With the score tied 5-5, the Chargers went on a 9-0 run to create separation and never look back. Colby-Sawyer led 24-14, but York did not give up to score three more points before a Giovani Dos Reis kill ended the frame to give the Chargers a 2-0 lead. 

The Cardinals hit .296 in the third set for 12 kills to make the match 2-1 in favor of Colby-Sawyer. The action was back and forth as the teams traded the first 16 points of the frame. The score was later tied at 17-17 when York used a 3-0 spurt, capped by a Heyliger Jr. kill, to take a 20-17 lead. Akil Vaughn had a pair of kills in the final three points for York to lift the home team to the 25-20 win. 

The Chargers ended the match the way it began with another 14 kills in the fourth. Despite trailing 7-5, Colby-Sawyer turned things around with eight consecutive points, capped with a Nate Trevino kill, to take a comfortable 13-7 lead. York closed the gap to 15-13, but the Chargers pulled away. Trevino posted his 10th kill of the night to end the set and secure the match.
