Chargers Defeat Dean, 3-1

NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 26, 2020 – The Colby-Sawyer men's volleyball team earned a 3-1 non-conference victory over Dean College Wednesday evening. The Chargers won by scores of 23-25, 25-10, 25-20 and 25-16.  

Colby-Sawyer improves to 7-4. The Chargers will host Lesley for a pair of matches on Friday beginning at 5 p.m. Dean, which will become a full-time member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) next fall, drops to 2-12. The Bulldogs play a pair of matches at NVU-Johnson on Saturday at noon.

Freshman Giovani Dos Reis (Hillside, N.J.) and junior Andrew Kovacs (Wellesley, Mass.) led the Chargers with nine kills apiece. Dos Reis hit .421 to go with four aces, while Kovacs finished at .381. Sophomores Orlando Plagata (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Eric Miller (La Grange, Ill.) added eight kills apiece. Plagata added a match best 24 digs. Sophomore AJ Gnieski (Needham, Mass.) tallied 39 assists and three aces.

Dean junior Aaron Brody (Webster, Mass.) registered a double-double of 11 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Tyler Martins (East Providence, R.I.) collected 20 assists. Sophomore Aaron Rivers (Punta Gorda, Fla.) picked up a team best 18 digs.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead with a 25-23 first-set victory. Dean posted six kills in the set, three by John Kauffman (East Providence, R.I.), and benefited from eight Colby-Sawyer service errors.

Colby-Sawyer rebounded with a strong effort in the second to cruise to a 25-10 victory. The Chargers tallied 10 kills and hit .240. Dos Reis and Miller had three kills apiece. Colby-Sawyer also had six aces in the frame.

The home team carried the momentum into the third and came away with a 25-20 win. The team posted double-digit kills for the third set in a row. Dean also hit the ball well with 11 kills, to keep the set close. Kovacs and Dos Reis pitched in three kills each with no errors to lead the Chargers. Brody and Kauffman also had three kills for the Bulldogs.

Colby-Sawyer clinched the victory with a match-high 13 kills in the fourth. Plagata paced the Chargers with five kills to secure a 25-16 win.
