Women's Tennis Celebrates Senior Day with 8-0 Win over Saint Anselm

NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 14, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team defeated Division II Saint Anselm of the Northeast-10 Conference, 8-0, on Sunday afternoon.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 12-5 and will play a regular season finale at Babson next Friday for the team's last preparation prior to the NCAA Tournament in May. Saint Anselm ends its season at 6-15.

The Chargers swept doubles action, but all three matches were closely contested. At the top spot, the Colby-Sawyer duo of sophomore Yashu Yang (Kunming City, China) and first-year Anna Kopituk (Morristown, Tenn.) edged Emily Jacy and Kaitlin Hughes (8-7 (7-4). In No. 3 doubles, seniors Hilary Boucher (Presque Isle, Maine) and Michelle Lopes (West Hartford, Conn.) also needed a tie-breaker to defeat Maikah Bulpitt and Dominique Bolduc, 8-7 (7-1). Senior tandem Aislinn O'Connor (New Fairfield, Conn.) and Maddy Gemerek (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) combined for an 8-4 triumph over Tess Malerbi and Kayla Hodas at No. 2.

Yang cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win at the top singles flight, while Gemerek, O'Connor and Boucher also won their singles matches in straight sets. O'Connor continued her climb up the all-time wins lists. She now ranks 3rd in career victories with 120, third in doubles wins with 65 and fourth in singles wins with 55.

At the fifth flight, Colby-Sawyer junior Alexa Conlin (Westborough, Mass.) dropped the first set to Kayla Hodas 6-4, but went on to win the second set 6-1 to tie the match. With the team result already decided, Conlin won the third set 10-5.

Kopituk and Malerbi were tied 5-5 in the first set when the rains began, forcing their No. 2 match to go unfinished.
