Men's Volleyball Edged by Regis

NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 27, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer men's volleyball team dropped a hard-fought match to Regis, 3-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Wednesday evening. The Pride won by scores of 30-28, 25-20, and 25-15.

Regis improves to 6-7 overall and 1-3 in the GNAC. The Pride return to the court on March 12 at Bard. Colby-Sawyer falls to 6-6 overall and 0-4 in conference action in the program's inaugural season. The Chargers host NVU-Johnson next Wednesday.

The Pride received 12 kills apiece from senior Drew Beimel (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and sophomore Kostea Andreenko (Marstons Mills, Mass.). Andreenko hit .647, while Beimel hit .429. First-year Brendan Lam (Rockville, Md.) finished with 28 assists, while first-year Zabdiel Frias (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) collected a match-best 16 digs.

First-year Orlando Plagata (Los Angeles, Calif.) led Colby-Sawyer with nine kills and 10 digs. Junior Patrick Coffey (Westford, Mass.) added seven kills and three blocks. Sophomore Nate Trevino (Boerne, Texas) contributed four kills, six digs and three blocks. First-year AJ Gnieski (Needham, Mass.) tallied 24 assists.

The first set was back and forth throughout and featured 14 ties and seven lead changes. The Chargers held a 24-22 lead, but a Beimel kill and a Colby-Sawyer error knotted the game at 24-24. Another Beimel kill put the Pride in the driver's seat, but a service error pulled the Chargers even at 25-25. Each team would have another set point, but could not close the deal. With the score tied at 28-28, Regis received a kill from Andreenko, his sixth of the set, and a Colby-Sawyer attack error to take the set 30-28.

The second set began like the first and saw 10 ties and five lead changes. The frame was tied at 16-16 when Regis went on a 5-1 run to force a Colby-Sawyer timeout. The Chargers got a couple of points back, but Andreenko clinched the set, 25-20, with his ninth kill of the match. Beimel had six kills in the frame for Regis, while Coffey posted three for the Chargers.

The teams were tied at 6-6 to begin the third, but that would be the final tie of the match. Regis held a 9-8 advantage when a 9-2 created separation at 18-10. Beimel finished the set and the match with his 12th kill to send Regis home with the 3-0 win.
