Big 6th Inning Grabs Win for Softball

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Hilbert College softball team had to endure another rain delay issue this morning, but they did take the field at 2pm against Rivier College and 6pm against the University of Mary Washington.

Hilbert used a big 6th inning push and took over the early game with five runs scored in the final two innings to earn their first win, 7-4 against the Raiders.

Mary Washington scored multiple runs in all five innings while limiting Hilbert to only four hits en route to their 17-0 5-inning victory.

Marisa McIntyre split the day in the circle, going the full game against Rivier and while facing 12 batters in the night cap.

GAME ONE

Morgan McNeill went 3 for 4 and scored two runs and Alyssa Barnas chipped in a 2 for 4 game.

Both Barnas and Hannah Prenoveau each picked-up a double while Melanie Basile earned the Hawks' only triple in the game.

Marisa McIntyre found her groove and sent seven back to the dugout in seven innings while giving up nine hits and three earned runs.

Rivier got on the board first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Hilbert responded with a pair at the top of the third but trailed again, 3-2 at the top of 5th.

Emma McNamara, who entered as pinch runner, moved from 1st to 3rd base off Morgan McNeill's single and sprinted home off a passed ball before Morgan Grosch made any contact at the plate.  McNeill was pushed home off Grosch's RBI ground-out and the inning ended after two more Hilbert outs.

At the top of the 6th, McNeill hit a long single and stretched it to second base;  she moved to third when Grosch took a bag and then stole home off a passed ball.

Melanie Basile followed with a triple, scoring Grosch and Victoria Grayson stretched right back to the right fielder again to score Basile.  Papasergi entered as a pinch runner for Grayson and made it home when Hannah Prenoveau poked a double to centerfield.

Alyssa Barnas tacked another run on the board for the Hawks in the 7th after she opened the inning with a single to the short stop.

GAME TWO

Mary Washington made contact with the ball regularly and built a 9-0 lead after two innings which they stretched to 17 through four sessions.

The Hawks collected four hits in the night cap led by Maia Delaney's 2 for 2 effort. Gabriella Bongiorno and Melanie Basile finished with the other two Hilbert hits.

Hilbert has tomorrow off from competition but will square off against Coe College, 11:30 am  (LIVE STATS) and Grove City (1:30 pm) Wednesday, March 6.  Both games will have live video of the game which is provided graciously by the North Myrtle Beach sports complex the softball tournament is held at.
