Brockport Takes Down St. Joe's, Faces Wooster in Mauro Panaggio Championship Game

Daytona Beach, FL – The College at Brockport men's basketball team defeated Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Sunday in the first round of the Mauro Panaggio Tournament, 83-73. The Golden Eagles advance to the tournament's championship game Monday at 2 pm against the College of Wooster.

Justin Summers shot an incredible 12-for-17 from the floor, recording a 26 point-10 rebound double-double to lead the way. Tyler Collins put up 16 points and five assists, while Jahidi Wallace tallied 13 points and seven boards. Monte Stroman played well off the bench with 12 points and four steals, shooting 4-for-6 from downtown.

Brockport owned the lead for nearly the entire first half, as St. Joe's only spent 40 seconds with a lead throughout the first 20 minutes. With five 5:27 left before halftime, the Green and Gold took a 13-point advantage which would be its largest lead in the first. Summers shot 8-for-10 in the first half, leading the game with 17 points. Wallace also broke into the double-digits with 11 first half points. Brockport took a 41-34 edge into the locker room at the mid-game break.

The Golden Eagles would not relinquish its lead throughout the entire second half, as St. Joe's was unable to take control of the scoreboard. The Monks stayed within striking range thanks to some great 3-point shooting, as they went 15-for-31 from beyond the arc in the contest. Even after Brockport took its largest lead of the day, a 16 point advantage with 6:37 left in regulation, St. Joe's climbed back in it. By the two-minute mark the Monks had cut the lead to just six points, but Brockport held them off for the 10-point victory.

The Green and Gold controlled the interior all game, outrebounding St. Joe's, 42-34, and outscoring the opponent, 50-16. Brockport also won the turnover battle, with 12 fewer turnovers than the Monks. The team is now 6-1 overall and has won six straight games going into the Championship Game tomorrow.

Saint Joseph's College of Maine is now 2-6 on the season and will take on St. John Fisher in the Consolation Game tomorrow at 12 pm. The Monks were led by Jack Casale's 18 points and eight rebounds, while Nicholas Curtis and Griffin Foley combined for 29 points.

Tomorrow marks the final day of the Mauro Panaggio Tournament, as the Golden Eagles are set to take on The College of Wooster in the Championship Game. Wooster defeated St. John Fisher on day one, 81-80. The championship game is set to tip-off at 2 pm at the DME Sports Academy.
