Simmons Women's Tennis Falls to No. 6 Middlebury in NCAA Tournament Second Round, 5-0

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Simmons College women's tennis team was defeated by number six nationally-ranked Middlebury College, 5-0, this afternoon at Pickard Courts in Brunswick, Maine on the campus of regional host Bowdoin College in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Sharks fall to 17-5 to finish their season with a school record for victories, while the Panthers improve to 10-6. Middlebury will play Bowdoin College, a 5-0 winner over Ithaca College, tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.

The Panthers took all three doubles matches and lost just two games in doing so. Sophomore Alexandra Fields (Coral Gables, Fla.) and junior Lauren Amos (Tucson, Ariz.) put Middlebury on the board with an 8-0 victory over the Simmons pair of junior Katie Crowley (Reading, Mass.) (16-6 singles, 17-7 doubles) and first year Han DK Le(Tra Vinh, Vietnam/Matignon HS (Mass.)) 15-5 singles, 14-3 doubles).

Middlebury's first doubles team of sophomore Lily Bondy (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior Ria Gerger (Houston, Texas) registered an 8-1 victory over the Sharks' sophomore Theresa Reinhard (Canton, Ohio) (11-12 singles, 14-8 doubles) and junior Meg Cokely(Haverhill, Mass.) (18-5 singles, 12-9 doubles).

The Panthers' pair of sophomore Kaysee Orozco (New Milford, N.J.) and sophomore Jennifer Sundstrom (Bradenton, Fla.) gave Middlebury a 3-0 lead after winning at number two doubles over the junior Simmons duo of Rachael Downey (Groveland, Mass.) (7-12 singles, 15-9 doubles) andCaroline Khoury (Portsmouth, Ohio) (7-8 singles, 12-8 doubles) by an 8-1 count.

Bondy gave the Panthers a 4-0 lead after a 6-0, 6-0 showing at number three singles over Downey, while Gerger clinched the dual match with a 6-2, 6-0 win at first singles over Reinhard.
