GNAC Women's Soccer Report: Week 1

(FOR THE WEEK OF AUG. 31-SEPT. 2)

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Kaila Lemmer, Norwich (Jr., M - Barnard, Vt.)

Lemmer led Norwich to a 2-0 start, its best start since the 2014 season with three goals and an assist in two victories on the weekend. She scored the second goal in a 4-0 win over Newbury College on Friday, she then added two goals and an assist vs. Pine Manor on Saturday. Her seven points lead the GNAC in scoring so far.

GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK

Megan Ricci, St. Joseph (Conn.) (Jr., GK - Center Moriches, N.Y.)

Ricci posted a pair of clean sheets in as many games to start the 2018 campaign 2-0 for the Blue Jays. The 2017 All-GNAC second team netminder stopped 10 shots over the weekend without surrendering a goal in 180:00 minutes of action between the pipes. She made four saves in the season-opening 1-0 win on the road at Manhattanville on Friday before stopping six shots on goal in a 4-0 rout at Dean on Sunday.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Karyssa Lachance, Norwich (Fr., M - Gorham, N.H.)

Lachance scored a goal in each of her first two collegiate games to help lead Norwich to its best start since 2014 with two wins. Lachance scored vs. Newbury in a 4-0 win and then also added the game-winning goal vs. Pine Manor in a 6-0 victory. She has 14 shots, which leads the team and ranks among the GNAC leaders.


WEEK 1 HONOR ROLL

Olivia Cairrao, Johnson & Wales (RI) (So., M - Bristol, R.I.) - Scored the game-winning goal in the 2-0 victory over UMass Boston. Scored from 21 yards out with less than four minutes left in the game.

Colleen Lynch, Johnson & Wales (RI) (Jr., GK - New Milford, Conn.) - Stopped all six shots she faced to give the Wildcats a 2-0 shutout of UMass Boston in the season opener. 

Kaylee Francis, Regis (Mass.) (Fr., M/F - Millis, Mass.) - Kaylee Francis scored her first career collegiate goal in Regis's season opener Saturday at Maine Farmington. Her goal with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation tied the match at 2-2. All three shots she took against the Beavers were on goal. She also saw action in Sunday's match against Emerson. 

Brittany Fletcher, Rivier (Jr., M - Tewksbury, Mass.) - Fletcher scored the double overtime game-winner in the team's only game of the week.

Jessica Spezzano, St. Joseph (Conn.) (Gr., F - Watertown, Conn.) - Spezzano factored in both game-winning goals to start the 2018 campaign 2-0 for the Blue Jays in the opening weekend of action. Spezzano assisted on the game-winning goal in the season-opening 1-0 victory at Manhattanville on Friday, then Sunday at Dean, beat the Bulldogs' keeper just 2:51 seconds into the match for what would be the game-winning goal in a 4-0 triumph.

Adia Grogan, Saint Joseph's (Me.) (Fr., GK - Kennebunk, Maine) - Grogan kicked off her collegiate career with a pair of shutout victories, making eight total saves in 1-0 victories over University of New England and Husson University over the weekend. The 1-0 win over the Nor'easters is the program's first since 1998 and Grogan is the first freshman keeper to start her career with consecutive shutouts since 2010.
