Mount Ida Plays Host to Boston Breakers, US National Team Members

NEWTON, Mass. -- Fans of the United States women's national soccer team may have seen a few familiar faces on the field at Alumni Field last week.

That's because the Boston Breakers of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) used Mount Ida's home field as their training grounds last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, as they get ready for their season, which kicks off in a few weeks.

Among the members of the Breakers are National Team members Heather O'Reilly, Alyssa Naeher, and Kristie Mewis.

The Breakers also boast Kaylyn Kyle, Nkem Ezurike, and Chelsea Stewart, all members of the Canadien women's national team, and internationals from Australia, England and Colombia among their roster.

O'Reilly, one of the most veteran players for her country, has been a member of the US National Team since 2002, and has scored 40 goals in 200 appearances. She joined the Breakers in 2013 and played with them in the NWSL's inaugural season after the folding of the Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) league.

Mewis is no stranger to greater Boston, having grown up in Hanson, Mass. and played for Whitman-Hanson High School and the Boston College Eagles before a one-year stint in Australia and the 2013 season with FC Kansas City. She was traded to the Breakers this off-season and will return home for the start of the 2014 campaign, which kicks off on April 13th with a trip to Seattle Reign FC.

Naeher, a product of Bridgeport, Conn. and Penn State University, is in her second season with the Breakers and made a pair of starts a year ago in goal. She had previously reached the U-23 national team ranks before being called up, and is still awaiting her first international cap.

In the first year of the NWSL in 2013, the Breakers went 8-6-8, just barely missing out on the fourth and final spot in the league playoffs.

The Breakers, who play their home games at Harvard Stadium in Cambridge, will open their home schedule on April 20th at 6:30 pm against the Houston Dash.
