Emerson Advances to ECAC Semifinals

Emerson 15, Worcester State 11

Boston, MA --- Second seeded Emerson College (13-2)overcame a listless opening 20 minutes to defeat seventh seeded Worcester State College (7-7) 15-11 and advance to the semi-finals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference New England Division III Championship Tournament.

With the score tied at five following a three goal Lancer Comeback, the Lions answered with two goals by sophomore Maeghan Ross (Wrentham, MA) sandwiched around a goal by classmate Laura Miley (So., Cranston, RI) to take an 8-5 halftime lead.

A second-year Katie Peters (Acton, MA) tally to open the second half stretched the lead to 9-5 just 29 seconds into the frame.  The teams alternated goals with senior Shannon Feeley (West Springfield, MA) and Ross exchanging scores.

Goals by sophomore Carley MacIntyre (Townsend, MA) and Feeley brought the Lancers to within 11-9 with 15:46 remaining in the second half.  Emerson then ran off consecutive goals by Ross, freshman Amy Gervis (Randolph, NJ) , and Miley to take a 14-9 lead with just over seven minutes left in the game.

Worcester attempted one final rally as senior Michelle Astuccio (Foxboro, MA) and sophomore Karla Rotondi (Tewksbury, MA) scored inside six minutes, but Ross put the clamp on the game with a goal with 1.8 seconds remaining.

Worcester gained the early lead on a goal by Feeley 4:21 into the game.  Emerson took the lead with two from sophmore Katie Dodge (West Newbury, MA) markers in the next 3:07.  fourth-year Megan Rosborough (Uxbridge, MA) pulled the lancers even at the 10:01 mark.  Goals by Dodge. MIley and Dodge again forged a 5-2 Emerson lead just under four minutes later.

Worcester State rallied on goals by Rosborough, Astiuccio, and junior Amanda Cosenza (Shrewsbury, MA) to forge the 5-5 tie.

Both rookie goalies played well with Emerson‘s Kristin DeTroia (FY, Bridgewater, N.J.), and the Lancers' Haley Erickson (Saugus, Mass.) each having 12 saves.

Emerson outshot Worcester 33-26, and had 17 ground balls to Worcester's 11.

Ross led Emerson in scoring with six goals.  Dodge added four and Miley chipped in three. Gervis had a goal and an assist for the Lions. Feeley had four goals and an assist for the lancers.  Astuccio and Rosborough each added a pair and Cosenza had a goal and two assists.

Emerson will advance in the tournament to play third seeded Castleton State College, a 15-13 winner over sixth seeded Curry college.  Game time will be 6:00pm at Emerson's Rotch Field.
