GNAC Swimming & Diving Report: Week 9

WOMEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Sara Manjikian, Simmons (Jr., Belmont, Mass.)
 
The junior won first place on both the one and three-meter boards in a double-dual meet at Colby-Sawyer College with Regis College on January 11. The diver scored 221.50 points to top the field on the three-meter board and set a new pool record at the Knight Natatorium in New London, N.H. Manjikian scored a victory on the one-meter board with a total of 217.20 points as part of an 18-point day to tie for the lead among all scorers.

MEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Joseph Clark, Norwich (Jr., Acworth, Ga.)
 
Clark won the 100 yard backstroke in 57.4 and also took first in the 200 yard backstroke in 2:06.73 on Saturday against Elms College. His efforts helped the NU men to a 169-51 win. He also swam the first leg of the victorious 200 yard medley relay team.

WOMEN'S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Katelyn Quinlan, Simmons (Fr., Haverhill, Mass.)

The first year scored 13 points after placing first and second in a double-dual meet at Colby-Sawyer College with Regis College on January 11 in New London, N.H. The rookie placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a mark of 1:13.79 and added a second-place overall effort in the 50-yard breaststroke, clocking in at 34.57, which was good for a win over Colby-Sawyer. Quinlan swam the breaststroke clip of the 200-yard medley relay to help Simmons post a second-place time of 2:01.19 to Regis, but chalked up a win over Colby-Sawyer.

 

MEN'S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Robert Wood, Regis (Fr., Cathedral City, Calif.)
 
Wood picked up a key victory to lead Regis past Colby-Sawyer in Saturday's dual meet. In the 100 freestyle, Wood touched the wall first with a time of 52.15 seconds, less than 8/10ths of a second ahead of Colby-Sawyer's top finisher. Wood also posted a time of 1:54.80 in the 200 freestyle and a personal season-best mark of 2:09.37 in the 200 individual medley.

WEEK 9 HONOR ROLL
  
Ava Emery, Husson (So., Cutler, Maine) - At Gordon, Emery won the 100 yard breaststroke in a New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association Championship qualifying time of 1:19.20. Additionally, Emery won the 50 breaststroke (36.62) and also swam on the Eagles' winning 200 medley relay. The sophomore from Washington Academy collected a second place finish in the 50 yard butterfly (30.19). Her performance helped the Eagles remain unbeaten in dual meets with their double dual meet victories over Saint Joseph's (Maine) and Gordon.
 
Steven Johnston, Husson (So., Hermon, Maine) - Johnston racing in the Bennett Center pool at Gordon College established a Husson record in the 100 butterfly with his 56.97 first place finish Saturday. Actually, Johnston lowered his previous record of 57.39 set in 2019. Johnston also swam the backstroke leg on the Eagles' medley relay win in the men's double-dual meet with Gordon and Saint Joseph's (Maine). The sophomore collected two additional wins with first place finishes in the 100 Back (1:02.83) and in the 100 IM (1:00.07), helping the Eagles sweep the double-dual meet against the Fighting Scots and Monks.
 
Sarah Leonard, Regis (Sr., Brockton, Mass.) - Leonard was responsible at least in part for three of Regis' four overall event victories in Saturday's double-dual meet at Colby-Sawyer also involving Simmons. First, she led off the 200 medley relay with a 50 backstroke split of 29.11 seconds, helping the Pride win the event by 2.8 seconds in a total time of 1:58.39. Leonard then won two events individually, touching the wall first in the 50 backstroke with a season-best time of 28.66 seconds, almost two full seconds faster than her nearest competitor. After a third-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 26.42 seconds, she cruised to a 2.84-second victory in the 100 backstroke with a mark of 1:03.62.
 
Alirose Beauregard, Saint Joseph's (Me.) (So., Dover, N.H.) - Beauregard won the 50-Free (27.75) and finished second in the 200-Free (2:14.42) and 100-Free (1:00.31) events in a double-dual at Gordon College on Saturday.
