Host Southern Maine in Lead Following GNAC Men's Golf Championship First Round

GORHAM, Maine – Following Saturday's first 18 holes at the 2016 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Golf Championship, host University of Southern Maine is in the lead at Gorham Country Club in Gorham, Maine. The host Huskies shot an even 300 on Day One, just one stroke ahead of Saint Joseph's College of Maine (301), while defending five-time champion Rhode Island College is in third place with a 305.

Southern Maine's Tom Murray and Cameron Letourneau of Saint Joseph's of Maine are tied for first place overall with a 72 (+1), while Letourneau's teammate Michael Caron is in third with a 73 (+2). 

In a three-way tie for fourth place was Southern Maine's Grayson Waterman, Worcester State University's Mike Jezierski, and Saint Joseph's' Adam Hachey with a 74 (+3) after Day One. The student-athletes with the five lowest scores will receive All-Conference honors on Sunday. 

The host Huskies had four golfers amongst the top-11 scores and third-place RIC had four competitors withing the top-11.

In the team standings, Worcester State (315) is in fourth place following the first round, while the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth (322) rounds out the top five schools as student-athletes prepare for Day Two in Gorham on Sunday at 10:00 AM. 

Founded in 1995, the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) is an NCAA Division III association made up of 12 member institutions and over 3,000 student-athletes across the New England region. Each year, the GNAC sponsors and administers 17 championships, while balancing academic integrity, athletic opportunities and community involvement.
