Guitian Named All-American Honorable Mention
asell College mens basketball senior captain, Jose Guitian, has been named a D3Hoops.com All-American Honorable Mention. The 610 forward from Miami, Florida has earned an abundance of accolades this season, which now has culminated with the incredible honor of being recognized nationally, and becoming the first student-athlete at Lasell College to earn the All-American recognition.

Emmanuel's Smith Wins By Losing
Levi Smith finds himself on the losing end of the stick every night and he loves it. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies, Smith has certainly taken his show on the road. He graduated from Emmanuel College in 2008 as the men's basketball program's all-time leader in blocked shots and the program's fourth all-time leading scorer and subsequently signed on to play for the Washington Generals. The Generals are known world-wide for losing literally thousands of times to the world famous Harlem Globetrotters. Smith and the Generals now face defeat at the hands of the Globetrotters between seven to nine times per week. However, it appears that all of these losses have culminated in a giant win for Levi Smith.

Seniors Will Be Missed
This past week the Lasell mens basketball team saw their chances at making the NCAA tournament come to an end and so did the careers of four seniors, Jose Guitian, Brad Caravoulias, Junior Sainval, and Kevin Fallon. Despite losing, the season was not a complete failure for these four. All the guys played very important rolls and had their time to shine.

Becker Tops Rivier for New England Mens Basketball Championship
Becker sophomore guard Rajai Leggett (New Haven, Conn.) netted 10 point, grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, had 3 blocks, 3 steals and 4 assists and sophomore center Trey Jacobs (Lexington Park, MD) dropped in a game-high 20 points and fourth seeded Becker College used a clutch run early in the second half to pull away to a 89-73 win over seventh seeded Rivier College in the championship game of the ECAC Division III New England Men's Basketball Tournament.

Raiders Win Battle of Nashua, Advance to ECAC Finals
Against cross town rival Daniel Webster College, the Raiders of Rivier College wasted no time in taking advantage of their first ECAC tournament appearance in school history. Just 3 minutes into the game Rivier took an 8-6 lead on a 3-pointer by sophomore Nick Bean and never looked back as the Raiders cruised on to a 75-70 victory.

Lasell Comes Up Short in ECAC Semi-Finals
Becker College claimed a 85-82 victory in the ECAC New England Tournament semi-finals, upsetting the no. 1 seeded Lasers of Lasell College. After 15 lead changes and thirteen ties, the Hawks earned the right to host the championship finals on their home court. The Lasers completed their 2008-2009 season with a 19-10 overall record.

No. 7 Seed Rivier Upsets No. 2 Seed Colby-Sawyer, 72-62
The No. 2 Colby-Sawyer mens basketball team was upset by the No. 7 Rivier Raiders in the opening round of the ECAC Tournament, 72-62, Wednesday evening. The Raiders were led by senior Lance Bisson (Nashua, N.H.), who scored 20 points and dished out seven assists. Senior Duncan Szeliga ended his Colby-Sawyer career with 20 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, for his third double-double of the season.

Monks Eliminated in First Round of NCAA Tournament
Bridgewater State (21-6) defeated Saint Josephs (21-8), 95-79, in the opening round of the NCAA DIII Tournament on Thursday evening. Tyler Kelley 11 (Saco, ME) had 16 points to lead four SJC players who reached double figures. The Bears, who will travel to Middlebury College on Saturday for a second round contest, shot 66.7% from the field overall and 73.1% in the second stanza in the win.

Lasers Take First Round Victory From Salve Regina
In the first round of the ECAC DIII New England mens basketball tournament the Lasers of Lasell College pulled out an 89-84 win over the Seahawks of Salve Regina. The eight seeded Seahawks ended their 2008-2009 season with a 14-14 record, while the no. 1 Lasers (19-9) move onto the semi-finals on Saturday against no. 4 Becker College.

Thrilling Overtime Victory Clinches GNAC Title for Monks
Third-seeded Saint Josephs (21-7, 12-6 GNAC) needed overtime to get past #4 Emmanuel (17-11, 12-6) in the GNAC Championship game at the Harold Alfond Center on Saturday afternoon. The Monks held a lead for over 39 minutes in regulation, but a two-pointer from Saints forward Tyrone Buchanan 11 (Detroit, MI) as the final buzzer rang tied the game, sending the title bout into overtime. The extra frame was knotted at 72-apiece, but a back-door play executed by Elbie Murphy 09 (Loudonville, NY) with two seconds remaining clinched a 74-72 victory and a GNAC Championship for the Monks. Chris Davis 11 (New York, NY) scored a team-high 16 points in the NCAA Tournament berth-clinching win.

Saint Joseph's (Maine) Set to Host 2009 GNAC Men's Basketball Championship
Third-seed Saint Joseph's (Maine) defeated seventh-seed Albertus Magnus by a margin of 75-64 and fourth-seed Emmanuel upset first-seed Lasell in double overtime 94-91. Saint Joseph's (Maine) will host Emmanuel at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 28th.

Small Named to Academic All-America Second Team
Suffolk University Mens Basketball senior forward Brian Small (Stoughton, MA) was named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America ® Mens Basketball College Division Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Small, who majors in Finance at Suffolk Universitys Sawyer School of Management maintains a cumulative grade point average of 3.96. In six of his seven semesters thus far at Suffolk, Small has achieved a perfect 4.0 gpa.

Lasells Guitian Selected as Finalist for Prestigious Jostens Trophy
Lasells Jose Guitian has been selected as a top 10 finalist for the prestigious Jostens Trophy, a national award created by the Rotary Club of Salem, Va., to honor the most outstanding mens and womens Division III basketball players of the year. The award recognizes those who truly fit the ideal of a well-rounded Division III student-athlete, and is based on three components: basketball ability, academic prowess, and community service.

GNAC Men's Basketball Semifinals Set
Top-seeded Lasell College and third-seeded St. Joes of Maine College are set to host the 2009 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Mens Basketball Tournament semifinals on Thursday. Seventh-seeded Albertus upset second-seeded Emerson to advance to the semifinals and will travel to St. Joes of Maine. Fourth-seeded Emmanuel College defeated fifth-seeded Johnson & Wales to earn the last spot in the semifinals. The Saints will travel to Lasell College. Tip-off time for both games is set for 7 p.m.

2008-2009 GNAC Men's Basketball Tournament
The 2008-2009 GNAC Men's Basketball Playoff pairings are now available. The reigning 2008 GNAC tournament champions Lasell College Lasers are seeded first with a 14-4 GNAC record and 17-8 record overall. The Lasers clinched first place in the conference and the regular-season title when they defended their home court last Tuesday against second-place Emerson (17-8, 13-5) by a 79-68 margin. Emerson, the defending regular-season champion, clinched 2nd place with a road win over 6th place Rivier (14-11, 9-9) 64-55.

STANDISH, ME Saint Josephs mens basketball standout Elbie Murphy 09 (Loudonville, NY/Albany Academy) is the 10th player in program history to reach the 1,400-point plateau. The senior forward scored 12 points in a loss to conference-rival Emerson College on Saturday, February 14th to reach the mark.

Suffolk senior Brian Small (Stoughton, MA) has been named to the 2009 ESPN the Magazien/CoSida Academic All-District Basketball Team College Division First Team. Small currently carries a 3.96 grade point average and is majoring in finance. He currently leads the team in points (18.2), rebounds (9), assists (2.9), blocks (1.4) and steals (1.2) per game. Small is also in the top five of three GNAC statistical categories, points, rebounds, and blocks per game and was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Week for the week ending on February 2, 2009.

Lasells Jose Guitian (Miami, FL) had three huge performances this past week, averaging 28.3 points, 17.3 rebound, and 4.3 assists per game over the course of a 1-2 week for the Lasers. Guitian just missed a triple-double against Johnson & Wales University with 32 points, 21 boards, and 9 assists. He also had a 31 point and 18 rebound showing against Suffolk, and a 22 point 13 board night against Rivier.

Boston, MA -- Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers awareness weekend, a collaborative initiative of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the American Cancer Society, is slated for the weekend of Jan. 30 - Feb. 1, 2009. Participating NABC-member college men's basketball coaches, including Coach Adam Nelson and the Suffolk staff, will wear sneakers instead of dress shoes with their usual game attire during Saturday's game against Lasell College to demonstrate their support for the American Cancer Society and the fight against cancer.

Jose Guitian ( Miami, FL) scored his 1,500th point on January 22nd in a 79-70 win over Keene State College. Guitian netted his milestone points on an uncontested layup midway through the first half, then went on to score a game high 26 points and rip down 18 rebounds.

Suffolk Men's Basketball Visit Local Area Schools
The Suffolk University Men's Basketball Team visited two local area
elementary schools during the week of January 5th. The first visit was to the Montclair School in Quincy, where the players visited both a kindergarten and a second grade class. The players worked on reading with the kindergarten class and math with the second graders, and then everyone met in the gymnasium for some basketball drills and fun.

Emerson College men's basketball player Jeremy Shannon scored his 1,000th career point in a Monday, January 19 76-70 loss at Norwich University. Shannon, a junior guard from Lowell, Mass., scored a free throw with 4:44 remaining in the second half to reach the milestone. Shannon is the 12th men's basketball player in Emerson College history to reach the 1,000 point mark.

Jose Guitian Becomes Lasells All-Time Leading Rebounder
Jose Guitian (Maimi, FL) became the Lasell College Mens Basketball All-Time Leading Rebounder while playing at Albertus Magnus on January 10th, when he surpassed the previous career record of 853 total career boards, held by Demetrius DeJesus. Guitian broke the record less than two minutes into the game, having needed only two boards to set the new record. He then went on to record 17 total rebounds as well as score 24 points, leading Lasell to a 90-83 victory over the Falcons.

Guitian Honored as ECAC New England Player of the Week
Jose Guitian, the 610 senior, captain from Miami, Florida, has been recognized as the ECAC New England Player of the Week. Guitian received the honor as a result of a week that he averaged 22 points and 12.7 rebounds in three games for the Lasers. He tallied 25 points and 18 rebounds against Norwich and followed that with 29 point, 12 board performance versus St. Josephs (Maine). A complete player, Guitian also had 4 blocks over the course of the week and 8 assists.

Murphy Captures St. Joe's Career Steals Record
BANGOR, ME Saint Josephs College (Me.) senior forward Elbie Murphy (Loudonville, NY/Albany Academy) has broken the basketball programs career steals record. Murphy recorded a pair of steals in a 90-65 victory over Husson University on Tuesday night in Bangor, Maine to surpass Jamie Header '93 for the career steals mark with 288 grabs in three-plus seasons. Murphy grabbed the historic steal at the 14:06 mark of the second half when he pilfered a mishandled ball from Husson guard Brock Bradford.

Lasers Welcome Its Newest 1,000 Point Member
Brad Caravoulias went into the game on December 4th at Rivier College only two points shy of a 1,000 and what better way to break it then a three pointer to open the game. Caravoulias is a senior captain from Dracut, MA and is one of the best three point shooters to ever hit Lasell. Now he will be remembered for more then just his shooting.

Lasell Upsets #9 Brandeis in Season Opener
The Lasell College Lasers mens basketball team brought down the number 9 ranked team in the nation, with a 68-66 upset over the Brandeis University Judges. Junior Sainval (Maimi, FL) led the way for the Lasers with 7 three-pointers and a game-best 23 points, as the Lasers picked up an incredible first win of the 2008-2009 season.

Mount Ida's Dave Santos Sets School Record and Earns Tournament MVP in Route to a Tournament Championship
Junior guard Dave Santos (Mattapan, MA/Ben Franklin Institute) scored 41 points to lead the Mount Ida College men's basketball team to their first New England College tournament championship against Fisher College this Sunday winning 88-77. Santos would break the school record for points scored in a game surpassing alumni Josh Didick '04 who netted 40 points at Johnson State College on February 22, 2004. He would also tie alumni Doug Williams '06 for free throws made in a game with 12. In two games over the weekend, Santos tallied a total of 54 points, eight boards, five steals, and six assists and shot 52 percent from the floor for the tournament. Santos was named the tournament most valuable player while freshman Jeff McNair (Brockton, MA/Brockton), who notched 20 points in game one, was selected to the all-tournament team.

Emmanuel College Men's Basketball Picked #1 in Coaches Preseason Poll
The votes are in and the first ever mens basketball coaches preseason poll results are available. The number one slot in the preseason rankings goes to the Emmanuel College Saints with a total of 84 points. Saints head coach Jamahl Jackson returns 1st Team All-Conference selection Rob Williams-Hinton and 2nd Team All-Conference pick Mack Spellman, both of whom are back for their senior seasons. Williams-Hinton led Emmanuel last year, averaging 18.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Spellman averaged 15.3 points and a team-high 8.7 boards as a junior. Emmanuels other two returning starters are sophomore point guard J.P. Ventura and senior forward Andres Bustamante.
