Suffolk Adds New Varsity Athletic Programs to its Sport Offerings

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BOSTON – Suffolk Athletics just got bigger as the Rams will now have a chance to compete in six new varsity sport programs, Director of Athletics Cary McConnell announced Monday afternoon, including women's golf and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, which will begin this coming academic year.

"This is an exciting time for Suffolk Athletics," said McConnell. "To announce today that we are expanding competitive and educational settings for future Rams is a yet another step in Suffolk's mission to recognize and develop student's full potential while wearing blue-and-gold and afterwards."

The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) will soon begin hosting an outdoor track & field championship with incoming full members Regis College and Colby-Sawyer College joining the conference in 2017 and 2018, respectively. In addition to Suffolk now sponsoring track & field, GNAC members Emmanuel College, Lasell College and Saint Joseph's College of Maine currently sponsor the sport as well.

The GNAC is also exploring the possibility of adding women's golf as a championship sport in the future.

Suffolk will also add women's hockey, which will have a two-year build in period, however that is not a GNAC sport.

The addition of the programs will bring the total number of varsity programs at Suffolk to 19. This will give talented student-athletes the opportunity to compete in nine men's varsity programs and 10 women's varsity programs at the University.

A search for head coaches for all three sports and student-athlete recruitment will begin immediately.
