Bison Thwarted By Mount Ida, 1-0, in Overtime

Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. – Freshman Maegan Hernberg (Eastford, Conn.) scored the game-winning tally with 42.6 seconds remaining in the first overtime session to lift visiting Mount Ida past Nichols, 1-0, in a non-conference women's soccer match played at Michael J. Vendetti Field on Thursday afternoon.

Hernberg deposited the only goal of the match as she beat a diving Nichols keeper with a shot that found the bottom left of the net as Mount Ida topped the Bison in the first meeting since September 2, 2006.

Nichols had a pair of great chances as first-year Anjali Rowe (Newington, Conn.) tested rookie keeper Samantha Basler (Plymouth, Mass.) with a pair of shots at the 15:40 mark. Mount Ida outshot the hosts 10-7 while the Bison took four of the five corner kicks prior to the break.

Each team took seven shots in the second half while Nichols was awarded five of the seven corner kick opportunities of the frame. In the extra session, the Mustangs posted a 4-1 advantage in shots which included the game-ending tally.

Basler turned away seven shots in the Mount Ida victory. First-year backstop Melissa Toomey (Saugus, Mass.) collected six saves in the first 45 minutes of action while classmate Kelly English (Mansfield, Mass.) made seven stops in the balance of the contest.

The Bison (3-8-2) head back into Commonwealth Coast Conference action for the remaining four matches of the regular season beginning with a trip to University of New England on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. match. Mount Ida (4-8-1) wraps up a four-match road trip with a 1:00 p.m. GNAC contest at Johnson & Wales.
