Baseball Edged by NVU-Lyndon, 6-5

NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 25, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team was edged by Northern Vermont-Lyndon, 6-5, in non-conference action Thursday afternoon at Kelsey Field.

NVU-Lyndon improves to 18-17 and will wrap up North Atlantic Conference (NAC) regular season action this weekend with four games at Thomas College. The Hornets are in first place in the NAC standings at 9-3. Colby-Sawyer drops to 6-25. The Chargers will host a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader on Saturday against Johnson & Wales with a first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.

The Hornets were led by a 3-for-5 effort from TJ Santaw (Newport, Vt.). He also scored two runs. Leadoff man Ben Rollins (Lincolnville, Maine) also had three hits in six plate appearances.

Sophomore Charlie Danaher (Guilford, Conn.) had three hits to lead the Chargers. Senior Brendan Barrett (Nashua, N.H.) went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Junior Ben Lewis (Needham, Mass.) knocked in a pair with a double.

Senior Zak Johnson (East Hampton, Conn.) earned his first win of the season. He scattered five hits in five innings and struck out four. Senior John Boulay (Dighton, Mass.) picked up his fourth save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.

AJ Cavossa (Foxborough, Mass.) took the loss after pitching the first four innings. He gave up five runs, all unearned, on six hits. Sophomore Owen Cottle (Harwich, Mass.) threw 4.2 innings of relief with one unearned run on four hits.

The Hornets got the scoring started in the first inning with a bases loaded walk.

Lyndon then took advantage of a few Colby-Sawyer miscues to plate four unearned runs in the second frame to take a 5-0 lead.

Brendan Barrett knocked in Ryan Cummiskey (Billerica, Mass.) on an infield single to get the Chargers on the board in the third.

In the top of the fifth, Lyndon got the run back on a sac fly by Zak Johnson.

The Chargers fought back to within one after scoring four times in the sixth. Lewis had the big two-run double in the inning, while two other runs later came around on a throwing error.

Colby-Sawyer had something brewing in the eighth with two men on, but the inning ended with a great catch but the right fielder to thwart the rally.

Boulay closed the door in the ninth, setting down the Chargers in order.
