Cavossa's Walk-Off Earns Chargers a Split Against Johnson & Wales

NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 29, 2019 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team split a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) games with Johnson & Wales, on the final day of the regular season.

Johnson & Wales goes to 23-13 overall and 12-4 in the conference to earn the third seed in this week's GNAC Tournament. Colby-Sawyer ends its season at 7-28 overall and 4-12 in conference action.

GAME ONE – CSC 7, JWU 6

JWU junior Adam Diehl (Cypress, Texas) got the Wildcats on the board in their first at-bat with a RBI single through the left side of the infield.

Colby-Sawyer responded as quickly as they could with two runs in the bottom of the first. Sophomores Charlie Danaher (Guilford, Conn.) and Alec Burns (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) each knocked in a run in the frame.

The Wildcats retook the lead in the third with an RBI single and a sac fly.

Junior Armani Henderson (Johnston, R.I.) increased JWU's lead in the sixth with a two-run double.

Another sac fly in the seventh put the Wildcats comfortably on top 6-2 and three outs away from the victory.

The Chargers had other ideas and rallied to score five times with no outs in the bottom of the seventh to earn the walk-off victory. Charlie Danaher knocked in a pair with the bases loaded. With the bases reloaded and still no outs, junior AJ Cavossa (Foxborough, Mass.) hit a sharp ground ball down the right field line that hit first base and caromed into right field bringing around the tying run in Nathan Verge (East Kingston, N.H.) and the winning run in Kristian Viljanen (Morrisville, Vt.).

Sophomore Owen Cottle (Harwich, Mass.) earned the win after coming in to relieve the starter in the top of the seventh.

Sophomore Steve Rocchio (Cranston, R.I.) was saddled with the loss.

Danaher finished 2-for-4 with three RBI. Cavossa had two hits and two RBI, while senior Austin Butler (Saunderstown, R.I.) had three hits and two runs scored.

Junior Colby Greenhalgh (Plainfield, Conn.) scored three runs and added a pair of hits for Johnson & Wales. Senior Tim Lombardi (Providence, R.I.) and junior Retsyn Ooton (Pawtucket, R.I.) also had two hits.

GAME TWO – JWU 11, CSC 4

The Wildcats came out swinging the bats in the first inning and plated five runs. Armani Henderson continued his hot day at the plate with a bases clearing triple.

JWU added two runs in the third and three in the fifth to take a 10-0 lead. Colby Greenhalgh doubled to left to bring in a pair in the fifth.

The visitors tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh to make the score 11-0.

Colby-Sawyer tried to claw back in the bottom of the seventh with four runs, but the rally was halted with a pair of runners left on base. Four Chargers knocked in a run in the inning.

JWU's Mike Oppenheimer (Carolina, PR) was credited with the win after 2.0 innings of scoreless relief work.

Senior Ryan Glendye (Litchfield, N.H.) made his team leading ninth start of the season, but took the loss. Sophomore Owen Cottle (Harwich, Mass.) had two hitless innings of relief.

Greenhalgh finished with two hits, two RBI and two runs out of the leadoff spot for JWU.

Austin Butler led the Chargers with two hits, a run, and an RBI.
