Women's Soccer Suffers 2-1 Setback to Rivier

BOX SCORE

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 3, 2011 – The Plymouth State University and Rivier College women soccer teams each earned a victory on the first day of competition at the Colby-Sawyer Labor Day Tournament. Plymouth defeated New England College, 3-0 and Rivier beat tournament host Colby-Sawyer, 2-1.

New England College will play Rivier at 12:00pm on Sunday, followed by Plymouth against Colby-Sawyer.

Rivier College took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when sophomore Rebecca Wickens (Tyngsboro, Mass.) found an open Lauren Tamposi (Hollis, N.H.). Tamposi did the rest as she fired the ball past the dive of Colby-Sawyer keeper Shalyn Spencer (Natick, Mass.).

Seven minutes later, sophomore Deanna Cetto (Sterling, Mass.) put the away team up 2-0. Cetto was running down the right side of the field and ripped a shot across the goal mouth. Luckily for the Raiders, the ball hit the far post and ricocheted into the net.

Colby-Sawyer cut the deficit in half with four minutes to play in the first frame. Sophomore Stephanie Huntley (Woodbury, Conn.) sent a free kick towards the goal from 40 yards back. Rivier goalie, Christine Surber (Langdon, N.H.) tried to gain control of the bouncing ball, but Colby-Sawyer's Michelle Upham (Chelsea, Vt.) was able to disrupt the play and knock the ball into the net.

Down 2-1 at the half, Colby-Sawyer had numerous chances in the second, but Surber was up to the task every time and ended with nine saves. Spencer made five saves in the loss for Colby-Sawyer.
